DURHAM, N.C.—Duke sophomore striker Jeremy Ebobisse scored in the 25th minute and the Blue Devils posted a shutout to come away with a 1-0 road victory at Pittsburgh in ACC men's soccer action Saturday night. The clean sheet was the second for Duke this season.
Duke improves to 8-6-2 overall and to 2-4-1 in ACC play, while Pitt drops to 5-8-3 and 0-6-1 on the year. The win was the first road victory for the Blue Devils this season.
The Blue Devils, now with seven points in ACC play, controlled the run of play from the opening whistle. Brian White nearly put the Blue Devils up 1-0 early in the game after a through ball from Ebobisse, but the Pitt goalie came off his line well to smother the ball.
Ebobisse broke through in the 25th minute, perfectly finishing a pass from Zach Mathers. The sophomore forward collected the pass from Mathers on the left side of the penalty box and beat Dan Lynd to the far post for his sixth goal of the year and his first since Oct. 5 against Hofstra.
In search of a second goal, Duke continued to press forward in the final 20 minutes of the half, but couldn't connect heading into halftime with a lead for the fifth time of the season.
The trend continued for the Blue Devils in the second half as they dominated possession, but couldn't find that pass in the final third to get the second tally. Mathers had a couple of good looks as did White, but a solid defense from the Panthers kept Duke to just the single tally.
Pittsburgh had a couple of dangerous attacks into the Blue Devils' final third in the second half, but Duke's defense did well to keep the Panthers from getting good looks at goal. Pittsburgh finished with just two shots in the game and only one on goal.
Duke outshot the Panthers 15-2 for the game with Mitch Kupstas making one save to post his first career shutout as a Blue Devil. Lynd made three saves in the 1-0 setback.
The Blue Devils with seven points in ACC play sit in eighth place in the ACC and have clinched a spot in the ACC Tournament. They are just two points behind seventh-place Boston College with one game to play.
Duke closes out its non-conference schedule Tuesday, Oct. 27 against Jacksonville at 7 p.m.
