DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore forward Azurá Stevens did a little bit of everything to headline a Duke attack that topped Winthrop Sunday night, 78-50. The second-year player out of Raleigh, N.C., led all players with 18 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks, totaling the fifth-most rejections in a game by a Blue Devil in program history.
With the win, 14th-ranked Duke moves to 2-0 on the season, while Winthrop falls to 0-2. As a team, Duke tied the school record for most blocks in a single game with 16 combined, including a career-high five from graduate student Amber Henson. In addition to the 16 rejections, the Blue Devils recorded 12 steals and outrebounded the Eagles, 51-36.
Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell ignited the offense early for the Blue Devils, scoring the first nine points for the home team on perfect 3-of-3 shooting from deep. Greenwell never took a shot from inside the arc during the game, but turned in an efficient 5-of-10 (.500) shooting performance from long distance to tally 17 points, including the 500th point of her career. After a fastbreak layup from rookie Kyra Lambert forced a Winthrop timeout with the score 11-2 just three minutes into the game, the two teams played relatively even the rest of the period, as Duke took a 27-17 lead into the second stanza.
The second quarter featured a surge from the Eagles as the Blue Devils struggled with ball control, turning the ball over nine times during the 10-minute stretch. With Duke up nine midway through the period, Winthrop rattled off a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 32-29. The momentum was short-lived however, as Stevens scored six of Duke's nine points over the final three minutes to put the home team in front 41-31 heading into the half. Greenwell led all scorers at the break with 14 points, while Stevens turned in a steady nine points, six boards and four blocks in the first half.
Stevens turned it on in the third quarter, pouring in her final nine points of the game in the period while pulling down five more boards and registering two more blocks. A balanced attack helped the Blue Devils slowly build their advantage, extending the lead to 19 points near the end of the period before heading to the fourth quarter up 61-44.
Winthrop's chances of staging a comeback quickly disappeared as the Blue Devil defense held the Eagles to just six points in the final quarter and scored 17 points themselves to cement the 78-50 victory. Duke stymied Winthrop's offense in the second half, holding the visiting team to 7-of-33 (.212) shooting over the final 20 minutes after connecting on 14-of-34 (.412) in the first half.
Next up for the Blue Devils will be a top-15 matchup against 13th-ranked Texas A&M Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Wednesday's game against the Aggies will be aired on ESPN3.
