DURHAM, N.C. – In an overtime clash between top-15 teams, the 14th-ranked Duke women's basketball team hosted 12th-ranked Texas A&M Wednesday night, falling to the Aggies by a score of 72-66. Redshirt sophomore
Rebecca Greenwell shot 8-of-10 from the field for 22 points and added six rebounds, while sophomore
Azurá Stevens chipped in her second straight double-double with 12 points, 16 boards and four blocks. Freshman
Angela Salvadores joined the duo in double-figures with 11 points of her own.
With the loss, Duke moves to 2-1 on the season, while Texas A&M stays undefeated at 3-0. Courtney Walker led the Aggies in the victory, scoring 22 points and hauling in 11 rebounds.
In what was an offense-focused first quarter that featured five lead changes, Greenwell paced Duke to a 21-16 lead after the first 10 minutes. The Owensboro, Ky., product shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and connected on her lone three-point attempt of the quarter to tally 11 points, leading all scorers. Back-and-forth play from both squads led to a 16-16 score heading into the final minute of the quarter, but a late trey from freshman and Texas native
Kyra Lambert and a fastbreak layup in the final seconds from Salvadores gave Duke the five-point lead heading into the second quarter.
The Aggies found their groove in the second quarter, outscoring the Blue Devils 15-9 to take a 31-30 lead into the break. Chelsea Jennings scored the last four points of the period, including a jumper with 14 seconds left on the clock to give Texas A&M its first lead since the third minute of the first quarter. At the half, Greenwell led all players with 14 points, while Lambert contributed three points, three rebounds and three assists over the first 20 minutes.
Texas A&M continued to extend its lead early in the third quarter, putting together a 12-2 run, including nine points from Courtney Walker, to build a 43-32 lead with 7:17 remaining in the period. The Blue Devils weren't phased, though, slowly chipping away at the deficit to bring the score to 52-47 at the end of the third quarter. Salvadores ignited the Duke comeback in the third with five points, while Greenwell and junior
Oderah Chidom each added four.
After bringing the Aggies back within striking distance, the Blue Devils opened the final quarter with a 7-2 run, capped by a Salvadores step-back jumper, to tie the game at 54-54 with 7:23 remaining in the game. Following a Texas A&M timeout and a quick three from the visitors, Duke scored five unanswered to take its first lead of the game since the second quarter. The teams traded baskets over the final minutes as the Aggies controlled possession with 0.9 seconds left on the clock and the score tied at 63-63, but tough defense from the Blue Devils forced overtime. Duke kept the Aggies' scoring runs in check during the fourth quarter, never allowing Texas A&M to score consecutive baskets without answering with a bucket of its own.
The Aggies built a 69-64 lead late in overtime, but a strong drive from freshman
Crystal Primm cut the deficit to three with 35.5 seconds left. The early push from the visiting team proved too much to overcome as the Blue Devils fell by a final score of 72-66.
Duke will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium to match up against Army Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. The game will be aired on BDN+.
