DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Azurá Stevens netted 17 of her career-high 32 points in the second half to power No. 14 Duke past Army West Point, 72-61, Sunday in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils outscored the Black Knights 19-5 in a pivotal third quarter to overcome a first-half deficit, moving the squad to 3-1 on the season.
Stevens turned in Duke's first 30-plus point performance since Elizabeth Williams had 33 in a win over North Carolina Jan. 25, 2015. She also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for her third consecutive double-double.
Behind Stevens' performance, the Blue Devils finished with a 46-18 scoring advantage in the paint and outrebounded Army, 40-30. Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell and freshman Angela Salvadores accounted for 13 points each in the win.
Trailing by three points at halftime, the Blue Devils opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run. The squad featured balanced scoring and maintained its advantage on the glass to remain in front. Stevens converted a three-point play in the final minute of the period to help Duke outscore the Black Knights by 14 in the third frame.
Army's Jean Parker fired off a pair from deep early in the fourth quarter to trim the lead to five. The Blue Devils responded with sharp shooting of their own, as Salvadores recorded the first trey of her career. Stevens secured a double-double a short while later and Salvadores found Greenwell with a behind-the-back pass that stretched the margin to double digits with just over a minute remaining.
The teams got off to a hot shooting start, with the Black Knights connecting on five of their first six attempts from behind the arc. Kelsey Minato poured in 13 points to pace the visitors to a 23-14 advantage before Stevens picked off a pass and took it down the floor for a layup just before the buzzer. Her basket cut it to a seven-point deficit at the end of the opening quarter.
A Greenwell three-pointer at the 7:31 mark in the second period narrowed it to a one-possession game, but Army scored on back-to-back trips down the floor to push the margin back to seven. Duke struggled to capitalize at the foul line, shooting just 27 percent (3-of-11) in the first 20 minutes. However, the Black Knights committed five turnovers down the stretch, allowing the Blue Devils to trim it to 34-31 at the intermission.
Both squads shot over 45 percent from the floor in the opening half and Duke rounded out the contest with 51 percent shooting (28-of-55).
In another bright spot for the Blue Devils, redshirt freshman Lyneé Belton came off the bench to score four points in her first appearance since Dec. 17, 2014. Belton spent the majority of last season recovering from an ACL injury.
Up next, Duke embarks for Cancun, Mexico where they will face Idaho, Iowa State and Texas State in the Cancun Challenge Thursday through Saturday.
