DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell drained five from behind the arc and added a season-high nine rebounds to send Duke past UNCW, 78-56, Friday in the Blue Devils' final non-conference matchup of the regular season. The Owensboro, Ky., native totaled 23 points to help Duke close 2015 with an 11-3 ledger.
Freshman guard Crystal Primm chipped in nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and sophomore Azurá Stevens and junior Oderah Chidom bolstered the Blue Devils' effort inside with 11 and eight points, respectively.
Greenwell and Stevens combined to score nine of Duke's first 10 points, pacing the squad to a 16-6 advantage midway through the opening quarter. Following a series of Blue Devil turnovers, a trey by the Seahawks' Jasmine Steele narrowed the margin to one, making it 20-19 at the end of the period.
Greenwell sank her second three-pointer early in the second frame, but both teams went cold from the floor for a stretch until Duke worked inside for a couple of layups. Seven different Blue Devils tallied points in the quarter, helping the home squad build its lead to 38-26 at the intermission.
Duke shot 57 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while the Seahawks held a slight 17-16 edge on the boards. Greenwell's 10 first-half points led all players and she also pulled down a team-high four rebounds.
The redshirt sophomore added three more treys in the third period, igniting a 15-3 Blue Devil run. Duke also capitalized at the charity stripe, hitting 9-of-10 over the 10-minute span for its largest lead of the game at 62-35.
Greenwell topped the 20-point mark for the second time in the last four contests as the Blue Devils maintained a 15-point margin. The squad also remained aggressive on defense in the final quarter, preserving a 22-point victory.
Duke shot over 50 percent from the floor for the second consecutive contest and held a 44-28 advantage in the paint. The Blue Devils also registered 17 fastbreak points for the contest.
