SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 12th-ranked Duke women's basketball team could not shake off a slow start in the Carrier Dome Sunday, opening ACC play with an 86-50 loss to Syracuse. The Blue Devils surrendered 14 treys and committed a season-high 32 turnovers to drop to 11-4 on the year.
Maggie Morrison of the Orange led all scorers with 25 points on 7-of-13 shooting from behind the arc. Syracuse also featured three other double-figure scorers while notching 24 fast break points and 27 points off of turnovers.
Sophomore Azurá Stevens turned in 12 points and 12 rebounds and junior Oderah Chidom added 10 points for Duke in the loss.
Syracuse jumped out to a 17-3 lead after the first five minutes, sinking three treys and forcing the Blue Devils into seven turnovers in that span. Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell accounted for six of the Duke's first 10 points on a pair of three-pointers, but the squad trailed 30-16 at the end of the first period.
Turnovers plagued the Blue Devils again in the second quarter but the deficit remained in double-digits despite a 17-8 rebounding advantage for the visiting team. Duke stepped up its effort on the defensive end and was able to whittle the margin down to eight before Morrison connected on her third from behind the arc. She added a fourth trey later in the period to boost the Orange to a 48-32 lead at the half.
Morrison's 12 points led all players at the intermission while Stevens paced the Blue Devils with eight.
The Orange continued to attack from the perimeter in the second half, shooting 40 percent from deep through the midway point of the third quarter. Syracuse widened the gap to 20 points behind balanced scoring and a combined 10 treys. Stevens secured her eighth double-double of the season but Morrison of the Orange added three more three-pointers to put the score at 74-45 heading into the final period.
Duke recorded just five points in the fourth quarter – its lowest scoring output in a frame this season – to 12 by Syracuse.
The Blue Devils continue ACC play Thursday in a 7 p.m. contest against Wake Forest at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
