COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP and Staff Reports) – Fourteenth-ranked Duke turned in a strong third quarter performance after trailing at the half, but ultimately fell to No. 2 South Carolina, 66-55, on the road Sunday.
The Blue Devils (7-2) limited the Gamecocks to just four field goals in the third period, but struggled to contain South Carolina's A'ja Wilson down the stretch. Wilson finished with a career-high 28 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman Kyra Lambert paced Duke with a career-high 16 points, including three treys. Sophomore Azurá Stevens added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Blue Devils never led in the first half, but finally broke through in the third quarter, stretching a lead to 36-31 behind seven points from Stevens. Duke also had the edge on the glass, with junior Oderah Chidom pulling down five of her eight boards in the third frame.
That's when Wilson started pushing inside. She had a three-point play, then drew shooting fouls her next two possessions, sinking all four foul shots for South Carolina (8-0).
Chidom regained the lead for the Blue Devils with a layup on a Lambert assist, but the Gamecocks responded with 11 unanswered points. Turnovers and foul trouble plagued Duke late in the contest, allowing South Carolina to widen the margin in the waning minutes.
Neither team shot above 43 percent from the field for the contest, though the Gamecocks held the upper hand on the boards at 43-36.
Duke returns home to play four out of the next five contests in Cameron Indoor Stadium following exam week, beginning with a Dec. 14 matchup with UMass.
