STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Five different Blue Devils registered hat tricks and No. 6 Duke held 20th-ranked Stony Brook scoreless in the final 14:02 to earn a 17-11 win in front of 4,860 fans at LaValle P. Stadium. Jack Bruckner and Case Matheis led the Duke scoring contingent with six points apiece.
Bruckner finished with five goals to bring his two-game total to 12 and Matheis matched his career-high six points with three goals and three assists. Sophomore Kyle Rowe went 18-of-20 from the faceoff X with seven ground balls in his return to Stony Brook. Rowe spent his rookie season with the Sea Wolves before transferring to Duke.
Duke, trailing 3-2 to the Seawolves, scored seven unanswered over a span of 10:57 to grab a 10-3 lead midway through the second quarter. Justin Guterding started the spurt and totaled three goals and two assists overall in the run. The rookie finished the game with those five points, bringing his total to 52 for the year.
Seven of the Blue Devils' goals in the 10-minute stretch were assisted as Duke scored four times in the final 3:48 and added four more in the first seven minutes of the second quarter.
Stony Brook, featuring the nation's fifth-ranked scoring offense, quickly answered with a commanding 5-0 run of its own to pull within two, 10-8, at halftime. The Seawolves scored twice on man-up opportunities and netted four goals in the final 2:31 of the half to make it close again.
The game of runs continued in the third quarter with Duke scoring four of the first five goals to stretch the lead back to five, 14-9. Matheis had two goals in that stretch for the Blue Devils. Stony Brook brought it back to four, 14-10, but Bruckner answered with his fifth of the night with 30 ticks left to push Duke into the third-quarter break up 15-10.
Stony Brook made it a four-goal game again to start the fourth, but Duke's defense clamped down and allowed no goals in the final 14:02, while the offense pitched in two more for good measure and the 17-11 victory.
Myles Jones posted three goals and two assists for five points to tie Jim Gonnella as the highest scoring midfielder in Duke history with 145 points. Deemer Class added three goals and two assists in the win. Senior Will Haus finished with two caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Stony Brook's Mike Rooney paced the Seawolves with three goals and two assists, while Challen Rogers had two goals and two assists.
Danny Fowler made 10 saves and three ground balls to earn his second career victory.
The Blue Devils are back in action in three days at No. 15 Marquette at 12 p.m. (ET) on CBS College Sports.
