DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt senior Dillon Haviland and freshman Mitch Stallings held the Demon Deacons scoreless as Duke shut out Wake Forest, 7-0, Friday evening at Jack Coombs Field. With the win, the Blue Devils improved to 30-22 on the year, reaching the 30-win threshold in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008-09.
In his final collegiate start, Haviland (3-1) turned in one of the best performances of his career, pitching a career-best 7.1 scoreless innings. The McDonald, Pa., native scattered three hits and retired 10 straight batters from the fourth to the seventh innings.
“Obviously a lot of emotions going into tonight with it being my last start,” said Haviland. “I just really wanted to have fun. Coaches, parents, friends, they were just telling me to soak it all in and enjoy it. Had some great plays defensively … Max Miller picked me up a lot. Evan Dougherty made a great play in the outfield. Just blessed to have this opportunity and to go out this way.”
Senior Andy Perez stole two bases in the contest to set the Duke single-season stolen base record with 34 on the year. Quinton McCracken established the previous record of 33 in 1992.
“It's something I really didn't really think about,” said Perez. “During the game you don't really think about it till I was out there. I had the 33rd and was going for the 34th and a right-hander on the mound … I thought, 'Here's my chance, I might not get another one.'”
Sophomore Cris Perez went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored to power the Duke (30-22, 9-19 ACC) offense. Perez's bases-clearing double in the third established a comfortable 5-0 margin for the Blue Devils.
Wake Forest (27-25, 12-17 ACC) was unable to find the gaps in the Duke defense and totaled five hits for the game. Third baseman Justin Yurchak led the way a double and two singles.
For the second consecutive game, Duke plated a run in the first inning. Freshman Max Miller walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before crossing home on redshirt senior Mike Rosenfeld's two-out RBI single up the middle.
The Blue Devils broke the game open with five runs in the third. A. Perez began the frame with a base hit and promptly swiped second. Miller drove him in with an RBI base knock to make it 2-0 in favor of the Blue Devils. Following a Peter Zyla single and Rosenfeld walk, C. Perez laced his 10th double of the season into the left center gap. Up 5-0, Duke tacked on its final run of the third with an Evan Dougherty base hit.
Duke added its seventh and final run in the fifth. Rosenfeld coaxed his second walk of the night and scampered to third on a C. Perez single. A balk called against Wake Forest's Connor Johnstone allowed Rosenfeld to come home.
Stallings continued Haviland's tremendous performance, entering the game with one out in the eighth. He struck out the last two batters of that frame before working a scoreless ninth to finish the game.
The victory gave Duke 30 wins in a season for the 11th time in program history and consecutive 30-win campaigns for the eighth time.
“When my class came in as freshmen, this program … we didn't expect to win,” Perez said. “That's the thing I'm most proud of as a senior. Every day we show up to the park, we expect to win. That shows with back-to-back 30 win seasons.”
Duke and Wake Forest conclude the series Saturday at 1 p.m. from Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils will honor 11 seniors prior to the start of the contest.
