DURHAM, N.C.—The honors continue to roll in for Duke's Myles Jones. One day after being named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-America first team, the junior midfielder was selected as the Lt. j.g. Donald MacLaughlin Jr. Award winner as announced the organization Friday.
Jones is the fourth Blue Devil to win the award, joining Jim Gonnella (1997), Kevin Cassese (2002) and CJ Costabile (2012). The honor marks the sixth time a Duke player has garnered one of the USILA major awards under head coach John Danowski.
Jones, the nation's leading midfield scorer, paced Duke's offense in 2015 with a career-best 77 points from 40 goals and 37 assists. He is the first Blue Devil midfielder and eighth Duke player overall to reach 70 points in a season. His 77 points are 11th all-time, while his 37 assists are tied for seventh on the chart. The two-time All-American is the second midfielder in Duke history to reach the 40-goal benchmark. Robert Rotanz also had 40 tallies in 2012.
In 18 games, the Huntington, N.Y., native scored five-plus points 10 times and finished the season with nine hat tricks on the year. He recorded a season-high eight points in Duke's win over Georgetown and registered seven versus Mercer and Air Force.
Jones surpassed Gonnella, who also wore the No. 15 jersey, as the top scoring midfielder in Duke history with four points at Marquette April 18. His 37 assists also are a record for a Duke midfielder, besting Gonnella's 32. He became the eighth different Blue Devil to be named a Tewaaraton Award finalist just a few weeks ago.
For his career, Jones has played in 56 games and registered 93 goals and 68 assists for 161 points. He currently ranks 21st in Duke career history in points and is on track to be the first midfielder in program history to reach the 100 career goals mark.
Duke finished the 2015 campaign with a 12-6 overall record and a runner-up finish in the ACC Tournament. The Blue Devils earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, falling to Ohio State in the first round.
