LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Eighteenth-ranked Duke was unable to recover from a 17-point first-half output, dropping a 65-48 decision to Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils (12-5) fell to 1-2 in ACC play with the road loss.
The Cardinals featured three double-figure scorers and tallied 27 points off of Duke turnovers while also holding a 42-36 edge on the glass. Sophomore Azurá Stevens posted her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds and junior Oderah Chidom chipped in 11 rebounds. Louisville was led in scoring by 15 points each from Myisha Moore and Asia Durr.
The Blue Devils got off to a slow start offensively, allowing Louisville to take an 8-2 advantage out of the gate before Duke worked inside to narrow the margin. Turnovers plagued both sides but the Cardinals held the upper hand after one quarter, 15-8.
In the second period, the Blue Devils came out with a tighter defensive effort until Durr of Louisville hit a three-pointer to extend the home team's lead to eight. The Cardinals recorded 13 of their first 20 points off of Duke turnovers and Durr added a second trey to make it 23-12 with just over four minutes remaining in the half.
A Lyneé Belton layup snapped what was nearly a four-minute scoring drought but Louisville maintained a double-digit lead through the remainder of the period for a 31-17 advantage at the intermission. The Cardinals' Myisha Hines-Allen led all players with 10 points at the break while Stevens paced the Blue Devils with six points and five rebounds.
Duke strung together six unanswered points early in the third quarter and continued to trim the deficit at the charity stripe, going 5-for-5 there. The Blue Devils whittled the margin down to 10 with 4:24 to play in the period but Louisville responded with a scoring burst of their own that put the game at 51-34 heading into the final frame.
The Cardinals had three players in double figures by midway point of the fourth period. Chidom spearheaded Duke's rebounding effort, matching her season-high, but turnovers kept the squad from getting into a rhythm on the offensive end.
The Blue Devils shot just 4-of-14 at the free throw line down the stretch in the 17-point loss.
Louisville won its ninth straight and improved to 4-0 in conference action.
The Blue Devils return home to host NC State in Cameron Indoor Stadium Thursday at 7 p.m. on RSN.
