DURHAM, N.C. – Trailing by seven points midway through the third quarter, the 22nd-ranked Blue Devils turned in a thrilling final 15 minutes but saw their comeback attempt fall short in a 65-62 loss to NC State Thursday in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke dropped to 12-6 overall and 1-3 in ACC play while the Wolfpack won its third straight conference game, moving to 13-5 on the year.
Sophomore
Azurá Stevens logged her ACC-leading 10th double-double of the year with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds, and freshmen
Kyra Lambert (12) and
Angela Salvadores (11) joined her in double figures as the Blue Devils shot nearly 50 percent from the field. NC State also featured three double-figure scorers on the evening, led by 19 points from Jennifer Mathurin.
Stevens opened the second half with a quick five points, giving the Blue Devils their first lead since the 8:14 mark in the first quarter. However, the Wolfpack sank three treys to swing the game back in their favor at 45-38.
Duke then limited NC State to one of its next eight attempts from the floor, allowing the Blue Devils to get back in front on a
Crystal Primm lay in with 35 seconds to go. That made it 49-47 at the end of the third frame.
The score continued to go back and forth in the fourth quarter, with the Wolfpack retaking the lead on its 10th three-pointer of the contest. Two free throws from redshirt sophomore
Rebecca Greenwell narrowed it to 58-57, but NC State pulled down back-to-back offensive boards and got a layup from Mathurin to push it to a three-point game with 45 seconds left on the clock.
Lambert
swished a three in between Wolfpack free throws, making it a three-point contest in the waning seconds. Salvadores
heaved a final attempt that bounced off the rim and away, giving NC State the win.
The Blue Devils started out shooting just 2-of-7 from the field but quickly made up ground as Lambert
scored seven of the team's first nine points. Salvadores
drained a pair of treys, but NC State went 4-of-4 from three-point range, including three by Mathurin. The hot start gave the Wolfpack a 21-17 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
NC State continued to fire away from the perimeter, but Duke responded with six unanswered points to cut it to 28-27 midway through the second. The Blue Devils also shored up their defensive presence inside, totaling five first-half blocks before tying the contest with 2:24 remaining. However, the Wolfpack finished the period on a 4-0 run for a 34-30 halftime lead.
Duke's home stand continues with a 2 p.m. contest Sunday against Boston College that will be broadcast on ESPN3.
