LAS VEGAS – Members of the 16th-ranked Duke women's tennis team returned to competition Friday, participating in the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. The opening day of the three-day tournament was highlighted by eight singles victories, including a perfect 2-0 day by freshman Kaitlyn McCarthy.
McCarthy, the 29th-ranked singles player in the country, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the singles competition after remaining unbeaten in day-one action. The Cary, N.C., native opened play by registering a 6-2, 6-3 win over UCLA's Kyle McPhillips before returning to the courts and downing Southern California's Gabby Smith, 6-3, 7-6. McCarthy's performance brought her career record at Duke to 12-1. McCarthy is set to face Florida's 51st-ranked Brianna Morgan tomorrow in a quarterfinal matchup.
Sophomore Rebecca Smaller played into the round of 16 following a 6-2, 6-2 opening-round victory over UNLV's Cristina Moroi. Smaller was unable to carry the momentum into her match against sixth-ranked Hayley Carter of North Carolina, as the London product fell, 6-1, 6-1. Smaller's record moves to 5-5 with Friday's result.
Similar to McCarthy and Smaller, senior and 28th-ranked Beatrice Capra recorded a first-round win, defeating UNLV's Aiwen Zhu in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. In her round of 16 match against No. 73 Spencer Liang of Florida, Liang won by default.
Redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova, juniors Alyssa Smith and 79th-ranked Chalena Scholl and freshman Jessica Ho each fell in opening-round matches. Makarova was unable to secure a victory against 56th-ranked Josie Kuhlman of Florida, falling, 6-2, 6-3, while Smith dropped her contest against 42nd-ranked Giuliana Olmos of Southern California, 6-1, 6-3. Ho suffered a straight-set, 7-6, 6-3, loss to 110th-ranked Anna Danilina of Florida. A 6-3, 6-4 loss at the hands of Stanford's Melissa Lord marked Scholl's fourth defeat of the season.
Scholl and Ho each rebounded in the consolation round, as the duo posted a 2-0 mark in the second set of singles matches. Ho downed 76th-ranked Jessica Failla of Southern California, 7-5, 6-2, moving her record to 6-3 on the year, while Scholl improved to 5-4 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Alaina Miller of UCLA. Smith moved past UNLV's Anna Bogoslavets by default, while UNLV's Paola Artiga took her match against Makarova by default.
In flight two of the singles draw, sophomore Samantha Harris picked up her second singles win of the 2015-16 campaign with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Stanford's Paulette Wolak. Harris is slated to face UNLV's Reka Szentes at 3:30 (ET) Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils were unable to pick up a win in doubles action on the first day of competition, dropping all four of their matches. The tandem of McCarthy and Ho fell to the No. 2 team in the country, North Carolina's Haley Carter and Whitney Kay, 6-2, while Smaller and Makarova suffered a 6-1 setback against Zhu and Carol Yang of UNLV. The Duke duo of Capra and Harris was unable to take a game against 50th-ranked Danilina and Morgan of Florida, falling, 6-0. Scholl and Smith also suffered a 6-3 setback during their match against the fourth-ranked pair of Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith of Southern California.
Competition resumes Saturday with the quarterfinal round of doubles play beginning at 1 p.m. (ET), followed by the singles quarterfinal round and the singles semifinal round.
