MALIBU, Calif. – Duke freshman Meible Chi remained perfect Friday during the first day of the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif., earning two wins in mixed doubles and a singles victory.
Chi, paired with Kentucky's Ryotaro Matsumura, opened day-one action in Malibu with a mixed doubles win. The duo defeated its opponent, the team of Jaime Barajas of Utah State and Liza Fieldsend of College of Charleston, 6-3. Chi and Matsumura faced off against the tandem of Oklahoma State's Katarina Adamovic and Purdue's Gergely Madarasz in second round play and registered a 6-4 win to reach the quarterfinal round. Chi and Matsumura will face North Carolina's Sara Daavettila and UCLA's Gage Brymer Friday at 1 p.m. (ET).
In addition to strong doubles play, Chi also earned a win to begin singles action. The Weston, Fla., native defeated St. Louis' Aspen Cervin, 6-1, 6-3 and will face California's Denise Starr, the 62nd-ranked singles player in the country, Friday at 2 p.m. (ET).
