Blue Devils Continue to Advance at ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A Blue Devil doubles pair and freshman Meible Chi each advanced during day three of the ITA Regional Championships Presented by Oracle, held in Chapel Hill, N.C. Semifinals of the doubles draw is set for 9 a.m. Sunday, while Chi's quarterfinal round match begins at noon.
Chi's torrid run in singles play continued Saturday, as the Weston, Fla., native posted two wins, downing Bianca Moldovan of NC State, 6-0, 6-0, and South Carolina's Brigit Folland, 6-2, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals, where she will face North Carolina's Sara Daavettila at noon. Chi owns a near-perfect 12-2 record this season and has reached the quarterfinal round in back-to-back tournaments.
A quartet of Blue Devils, including senior Chalena Scholl, junior Samantha Harris and sophomores Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy opened the day with a singles victory, as Scholl defeated North Carolina's Rachel James Baker, 6-2, 6-3, Harris downed Clemson's Fernanda Navarro, 6-2, 6-1, Hamlin moved past Wake Forest's Sam Asch, 6-3, 6-1 and McCarthy earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Katarina Kozarov of Furman. Each of the Blue Devils fell just short of reaching the quarterfinals however, as Scholl dropped her match against Wake Forest's Kimmie Guerin, 6-4, 6-3, Harris fell to North Carolina's Jessie Aney, 6-4, 6-3, Hamlin suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss to North Carolina's Alexa Graham and McCarthy was unable to earn a victory over Clemson's Ayan Broomfield, ending in a 7-6, 7-5 result.
The Blue Devils opened the day with doubles action. The duo of Hamlin and Harris secured a spot in the semifinal round of the tournament after defeating UNC Wilmington's Sabrina Barisano and Madara Straume, 8-3. The Duke tandem is slated to face Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta of NC State in a semifinal round contest, which begins at 9 a.m.
Two doubles teams, the pair of Chi and senior Alyssa Smith and the duo of McCarthy and Scholl, saw runs come to an end in the quarterfinal round of the event. Chi and Smith fell to Frantova and Stenta of NC State, 8-6, while McCarthy and Scholl suffered an 8-7 (2) setback to South Carolina's Caroline Dailey and Mia Horvit.
