DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore guard Kyra Lambert tallied a career-high 17 points and four other Blue Devils added double-figure scoring as the Duke women's basketball team ran past Grand Canyon Thursday evening, 90-47. The Blue Devils wrapped up a three-game home stand with a solid shooting performance to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Senior Oderah Chidom finished with 18 points, while freshman Leaonna Odom had 12 and junior Erin Mathias 10. Redshirt junior Rebecca Greenwell posted her eighth career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams got into a shooting rhythm in the opening quarter, with Greenwell and Lambert combining to go 3-for-4 from behind the arc and the Lopes answering with three treys of their own. The Blue Devils held Grand Canyon scoreless for the final two minutes of the period to take a 25-17 lead into the second frame.
Lambert helped Duke widen the margin to 20 late in the second quarter, while a lock-down defensive effort prevented a Grand Canyon field goal for over five minutes. The Blue Devils shot 50 percent from the floor in the first two periods to take a 48-24 lead into halftime.
Lambert led all players at the break with 15 points.
Greenwell and senior Oderah Chidom quickly joined Lambert in double figures, with Greenwell also spearheading Duke's rebounding performance with eight boards. Defensively, the squad continued to hold the Lopes below 30 percent shooting into the final quarter.
The Blue Devils outscored Grand Canyon 24-12 over the last 10 minutes to top 90 total points for the third time out of four contests to open the year.
Duke shot over 50 percent from the field for the second time this season and outscored the Lopes in the paint, 50-10. The Blue Devils also held a 46-30 advantage in rebounding behind 10 boards from Greenwell and eight from Mathias.
Grand Canyon's Marina Laramie totaled 22 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
Duke hits the road this weekend, traveling to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Vanderbilt Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. The contest will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
