NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Trailing by 10 points in the third quarter, the Blue Devils came back to tie the game twice down the stretch but ultimately fell by a 77-73 margin at Vanderbilt Sunday.
Duke suffered its first loss of the season to slip to 4-1 overall.
Junior Lexie Brown netted 21 points and redshirt junior Rebecca Greenwell supplied 17 while senior Oderah Chidom led the Blue Devils' effort on the boards with eight rebounds.
Chidom strung together five consecutive points to bring the Blue Devils within one possession in a back-and-forth fourth quarter. Brown then sank a pair of free throws to tie the game at 64-64.
With a minute remaining, Brown evened the score again at 71-71. The Commodores continued to capitalize at the line, and despite two more free throws by Greenwell that made it 75-73 with 16.5 seconds remaining, went on to claim the four-point victory.
The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage before Vanderbilt's Christa Reed helped swing the contest to the Commdores' favor midway through the first quarter. Duke received eight straight points from Brown but trailed 20-18 at the end of the opening period.
Vanderbilt widened the margin to eight in the second frame after starting the quarter on a 6-2 run. Brown kept the Blue Devils within striking distance and Greenwell knotted the score with a three-pointer at the 1:37 mark. However, turnovers plagued the squad in the waning minutes of the half and Duke trailed at the intermission for the first time on the season, 35-32.
Brown's 15 first-half points led all players.
In the third quarter, Vanderbilt stretched its lead to double digits while Duke continued to struggle offensively. Greenwell provided a spark toward the end of the period, breaking into double figures by hitting a layup, nabbing a steal and completing the three-point play at the foul line.
Junior Erin Mathias scored with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter and Kyra Lambert made good on a Crystal Primm steal to narrow the margin to four heading into the final period.
The Blue Devils rounded out the afternoon with 48 percent shooting from the floor (29-of-61) to 40 percent shooting (25-of-63) by the Commodores. Vanderbilt finished with a 43-34 advantage on the boards though Duke led in points in the paint, 48-30.
Reed headlined the Commodores' offense with 19 points while Marqu'es Webb had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
