DURHAM, N.C. – Junior guard Lexie Brown notched a career-high 32 points to send Duke past Old Dominion, 92-64, Tuesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Brown turned in 10-of-13 shooting from the floor and an 8-for-8 performance at the free throw line as the Blue Devils improved to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 at home. The other half of Duke's high-scoring tandem, Rebecca Greenwell, totaled 24 points and matched Kyra Lambert with a team-high six rebounds.
“It was a great game for us to be in attack mode,” said head coach Joanne P. McCallie, who earned her 250th victory at Duke with the win. “I thought that was really great that Lexie could come out the way she did, and then of course Becca could play off that with her and do what she does. I thought we grew as a team … I just saw energy – energy from Lexie, energy from Becca, energy from Kyra, energy from everybody. There was usually a defensive steal involved in that, and I just thought again we played off each other and that's how you can get those runs.”
Brown drained three treys to open the contest and baskets from Kendall Cooper and Greenwell helped pace the Blue Devils to a 21-10 start. Duke was also active on the defensive end early, notching six points off of Old Dominion turnovers.
Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first quarter, but the Blue Devils would take a 28-17 lead into the second frame.
The Lady Monarchs trimmed the margin to six with a 7-0 run midway through the second quarter before back-to-back layups by Brown put the Duke lead back in double digits at 40-30. The squad then held Old Dominion scoreless for the final 5:45 of the period to take a 48-30 halftime advantage.
The Blue Devils continued to shoot over 50 percent in the third quarter and Greenwell soon joined Brown in topping the 20-point mark with her fifth trey. Brown connected from three-point range at the 8:05 mark in the fourth quarter to solidify her career-best scoring performance.
For the evening, Duke shot 51 percent from the field (32-of-63), including a 60 percent mark from behind the arc (9-of-15). The squad also notched 34 points off of turnovers behind five steals by Brown.
Jennie Simms spearheaded the Lady Monarchs' offense with 33 points and Makayla Timmons added 15.
Up next, Duke heads to the West Coast for a two game road swing, playing at Long Beach State Friday at 10 p.m. ET and at Pepperdine Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
