DURHAM, N.C.— The honors keep coming in for the Duke women's soccer program as senior
Christina Gibbons and rookie
Ella Stevens were named to the TopDrawerSoccer Best XI teams Monday. Gibbons earned Best XI First Team, while Stevens received Freshman Best XI First Team accolades.
Gibbons, a native of Raleigh, N.C., was the 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, NSCAA First Team All-America and a First Team All-ACC honoree for the Blue Devils. She was excellent at both the defensive and midfield slots helping lead Duke to a 15-5-3 overall and 7-2-1 record in the ACC, before falling in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship.
One of 15 finalists for the Hermann Trophy, Gibbons was just the third Blue Devil to receive the ACC Defensive Player of the Year honor from the league as she helped guide the Duke defense to 11 shutouts on the season. A steady defender and dynamic offensive threat, Gibbons totaled a team-high eight assists to go along with four goals, including two game-winners. The 2016 Academic All-America's eight assists ranks tied second in the ACC.
Stevens made an immediate impact on the Blue Devils in 2016 with a team-best 10 goals and 26 points, which ranked tied second and fourth, respectively, on the Duke freshman record books. She added six assists along with a team-best five game-winning goals. The 5-9 midfielder from Grayson, Ga., was a 2016 Third Team All-ACC and All-Freshman Team selection along with a NSCAA All-Southeast Region honoree.
Her 26 points was tied for the third-most in the nation by a rookie, while her 10 goals were tied for fifth-most nationally. Stevens totaled two goals and two assists in the NCAA Tournament, which ranked her tied first on Duke's record charts with six points by freshman in in NCAA action.
