LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Duke University junior Brian White scored on a world-class strike in the 88th minute to lead the Blue Devils to a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 9 UCLA in non-conference men's soccer action this evening. The goal capped a fantastic overall performance from the Blue Devils against the Pac-12 favorite.
Duke remains unbeaten at 2-0-1, while UCLA suffers its first loss to move to 1-1-1 on the year.
After playing a scoreless 85-plus minutes that featured spectacular goalkeeping from both teams, White took a fantastic touch from rookie Suniel Veerakone, raced 15 yards down the field and struck a perfect shot off the inside of the left post for the winner with 2:03 left in regulation.
Prior to the wonder strike from White, goalkeeper Robert Moewes was the story for the Blue Devils. The graduate student transfer put on a clinic in net, making eight saves overall in the game and numerous highlight-reel stops.
After UCLA missed a penalty kick wide in the early portion of the second half, Moewes came up with stop after stop to keep the Bruins off the board. His saves ranged from point-blank saves to diving efforts as he posted his first shutout of the season.
Equally as impressive in the second half was UCLA goalkeeper Juan Cervantes. He stopped a Cody Brinkman shot from 20 yards with a dive to his left and then came up with incredible consecutive stops off a header from Jared Golestani and then denied Markus Fjørtoft on the doorstep with a diving stop.
However in the 88th minute, there was nothing Cervantes could do as White ripped his shot off the left post and into the goal for the game winner.
The first half also was a frantic one at times with both teams playing high pressure in hopes of being able to capitalize on a mistake. Duke created the most dangerous chances first after earning free kicks within striking distance of the goal.
Graduate student Ryan Thompson had a pair of fantastic services into the box for rookie CC Uche. The freshman center back wasn't able to quite connect.
The Bruins threatened had the Blue Devils on their heels late in the opening 45, finding open spots behind Duke's backline with through balls. Moewes made sure UCLA wasn't successful, making his first phenomenal stop in the 35th minute as Blayne Martinez snuck in behind the defense. Minutes later, Moewes had another big save, pushing another great chance over the bar.
UCLA finished the game with a 14-10 edge in shots and 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Cervantes finished with five saves, all of which came in the second half.
Duke returns to action against another top-15 opponent, traveling to take on No. 11 Boston College in the ACC opener. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., on Sept. 10.
