MALIBU, CALIF. – Both members of the Duke women's tennis team playing in Malibu, Calif., advanced with wins on the first day of the Oracle International Tennis Association (ITA) Masters.
Senior Sam Harris started the 32 player singles draw with a match against Jackson State's Tyler Smith. The Melbourne, Australia native dropped Smith 6-3, 6-2 to move onto the Round of 16. She will be joined there by junior Kaitlyn McCarthy who cruised past Northern Kentucky's Margita Sunjic 6-1, 6-0. Harris will meet Ohio State's 33th-ranked Anna Sanford while McCarthy's next matchup will be with St. John's 25th-ranked Jessica Livianu.
McCarthy and Harris also advanced in the mixed doubles tournament. Harris formed a tandem with Johannes Schretter of Baylor and the duo beat Anna Grigoryan of LIU Brooklyn and Matt Kuhar of Bryant 6-3 in the round of 32 and then dropped Sanford of Ohio State and Matic Spec of Minnesota 7-6 to reach the quarterfinals. McCarthy's teammate for the tournament is Tanner Smith from USC and they teamed to edge out Claudia Herrero Garcia of Nevada Reno and Alexandr Cozbinov of UNLV 6-2 and then moved past Lauren Proctor of Winthrop and Jack Malloy of California 6-3.
The pair will start Friday with the mixed doubles quarterfinals at 1:00 pm Eastern time followed immediately by the second round of singles play.
