PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A dominant day in the circle from Peyton St. George combined with Rachel Abboud's second home run of the season paced the Duke Blue Devils (19-17, 5-7 ACC) Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, as they picked up a 2-1 victory in the series finale against the Pittsburgh Panthers (19-13-1, 8-3 ACC).
St. George tossed her second complete game of the year and allowed just three hits while striking out seven to improve to 6-4 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in ACC play. The Mechanicsville, Va., native held the Panthers hitless through 5.1 innings before Pitt reeled off back-to-back base hits.
The Blue Devils wasted no time in getting things going, as Abboud sent the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center to give Duke a 1-0 advantage. From there, St. George would keep the Panthers on lock down, not allowing a hit and walking three through the first five frames. Duke added an insurance run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI double off the wall in center from Jameson Kavel that pushed Haley Wymbs across home plate.
Pitt would tally a pair of one-out singles through the left side in an attempt to get back into the contest, but a fielder's choice and a foul out behind home plate stopped the Panthers in their tracks. The home team would manage to end the shutout and cut the lead to one with a solo home run to right with two outs in the final frame, but St. George's seventh strikeout of the contest, a career high in ACC play, sealed the 2-1 series finale victory for the Blue Devils.
Abboud and Raine Wilson paced the Duke offense with two hits each, moving their season totals for multi-hit contests to 11 and 10. Abboud also set a career high with her fourth-straight contest with a hit, while Kortney Dry improved her career best streak to six-straight games with a hit.
Duke will remain on the road for its next contest, traveling to Coastal Carolina for a Wednesday, April 4 showdown in Conway, S.C. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. ET and will be live streamed through Chant Vision on www.GoCCUSports.com.
