DURHAM, N.C. – A comeback attempt fell just short on Sunday for the Duke Blue Devils (29-26), as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Campbell Camels (27-25) in the regular season finale at the Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils will now turn their attention to the 2018 ACC Tournament, which opens Wednesday, May 9 in Atlanta, Ga., at Georgia Tech's Shirley Clements Mewborn Field. Duke, the No. 7 seed, will battle No. 10 Virginia Tech at 3:30 p.m. ET. The winner will move on to face the second seed Pitt Panthers on Thursday, May 10 at 5 p.m.
Entering the final frame down 3-1, the Blue Devils began a rally sparked by a throwing error on the Camels that allowed Raine Wilson to make it to third base. A sac fly from Amelia Wiercioch cut Campbell's lead down to one, followed by a walk and two more Camel errors that would load the bases for the home side. However, a groundout to third stopped Duke's rally and secured the win for Campbell.
The Camels earned their lead thanks to a three-run third, as two hits and three Duke errors would give the visitors a 3-0 lead early on. Duke responded in the bottom half, as a Wilson double to right center drove in Haley Wymbs, making 3-1. With the hit, Wilson has recorded an RBI in four of her last five contests.
It was quiet on all fronts until the fifth inning rolled around, as Duke would use a single from Rachel Abboud, a Campbell error and a Wilson walk to load the bases with no outs. Severe weather would step in before Wiercioch could come to the plate, as a weather delay kept the teams sidelined for the next hour and 39 minutes.
Duke would look to capitalize coming out of the delay, but Campbell was able to earn a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to escape its first of two bases-loaded jams on the day.
Abboud and Wiercioch led the Blue Devils offensively, each recording two hits. Wiercioch and Wilson were responsible for driving in Duke's two runs on the day. Wiercioch (11-12) earned the start, going 3.0 innings and striking out three while allowing two hits and three runs, all unearned. Katherine Huey closed out the game for the Blue Devils, tossing 4.0 innings and striking out four while allowing just one hit.
