DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's soccer team is set to hit the road once again as the No. 10 Blue Devils travel to Blacksburg this weekend to take on the 23
rd-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies Sunday afternoon.
The conference match is set for a 2 p.m. ET start at Thompson Field, and will be broadcasted on ACC Network, marking the second consecutive contest for the Blue Devils on national television.
Recapping Last Week
The Blue Devils earned a total of four points in the ACC standings last week, defeating Wake Forest on the road before battling to a double-overtime draw at No. 1 Virginia.
A late goal from senior
Mia Gyau in the 85th minute propelled Duke to a 3-2 victory over Wake Forest last Thursday at Spry Stadium. Gyau provided the game-winning goal for the Blue Devils, notching her first score of the season in the at the 84:50 mark of play. After a shot from junior
Lily Nabet bounced off the crossbar, Gyau headed in the rebound to put Duke ahead, 3-2, with five minutes left to play. With the win, Duke extended its winning streak over Wake Forest to four games, while earning its sixth all-time win in Winston-Salem.
The Blue Devils battled to a double-overtime scoreless draw with top-ranked Virginia in Charlottesville to conclude the week. Duke picked up its sixth shutout of the season, holding the nation's top-ranked offense scoreless for the first time in 2019.
Duke vs. Virginia Tech
Sunday's matchup between Duke and Virginia Tech marks the 18th all-time matchup between the two ACC foes. The Blue Devils hold the all-time series advantage over the Hokies, 11-5-1, and have won the last three matchups. Duke is 4-3 across matchups in Blacksburg, and dropped two of their last three matchups on the road against the Hokies. The Blue Devils have had a TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honoree for four weeks in a row, most recently being senior
Mia Gyau. Gyau was named to this week's team of the week as an honorable mention for her performances on the road against Wake Forest and No. 1 Virginia this past week. The Colesville, Md., native joins fellow senior
Ella Stevens and sophomore
Mackenzie Pluck in players who have received Team of the Week honors. Pluck has received the recognition twice this season, while Stevens has earned the honor once.
Special Week For Gyau
Senior
Mia Gyau had a special week last week for the Blue Devils with a pair of impressive performances. The senior scored the game-winning goal in the matchup at Wake Forest, notching her second career goal and her first of the season.
The Colesville, Md., native returned to the pitch Sunday afternoon to help the Blue Devils to a shutout performance over top-ranked Virginia. She came off the bench, being inserted in at left back to help Duke shutout the nation's top-ranked scoring offense for the first time this season. With the performances, Gyau was named Duke Student-Athlete of the Week and also tabbed to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week as an honorable mention.
Gyau has returned for her senior campaign, after suffering two season-ending injuries over the past two seasons. The senior suffered an ACL tear during the second week of her sophomore campaign before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury a season ago.
Piper Stepping Up Big
Freshman
Sarah Piper stepped up big in the matchup at top-ranked Virginia last weekend, logging a season-high 85 minutes of action in the double-overtime contest. The first-year Blue Devil came off the bench, being inserted in at left-center back to help Duke to an impressive defensive performance. Piper played a vital role in helping Duke eclipse the shutout performance, limiting the nation's top-ranked offense to only 10 shots after being subbed in, including three of which were blocked.
Shutout Season
The Blue Devils have notched shutouts in four of their last six matchups, pushing their total to six on the season thus far. Duke posted shutout performances in five of their first seven games for the first time since 2015, and third time in the last 10 seasons. Duke only allowed three goals across the month of September, while outscoring their opponents 19-3 across the month. Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Brooke Heinsohn has posted three solo shutout performances, while combining with freshman
Ruthie Jones in the team's other three efforts. Heinsohn has recorded 29 saves this season, notching a save percentage of .806 and a record of 6-1-3. Most recently, the Blue Devils earned a shutout over No. 1 Virginia, holding the nation's top-ranked offense scoreless for the first time this season.
Duke in the Polls
Duke checked in at No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week as one of five ACC teams in the top 10, and one of seven schools ranked in the top 25. Additionally, the Blue Devils are ranked seventh in the Soccer America Top 25, and 11th in the
TopDrawerSoccer rankings. Duke is ranked for the 53rd straight week in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, dating back to the ninth week of the 2015 season, when the Blue Devils were ranked No. 22.
