DURHAM, N.C. – During fall play, Duke softball named three captains for the upcoming 2020 season. Senior
Raine Wilson and junior
Rachel Abboud will serve as returning captains while sophomore
Deja Davis was named a captain for the first time.
"Leadership is one of the most critical components to a team's success," head coach
Marissa Young said of her three captains. "The voices, mentors and models inside the locker room have the biggest impact on a healthy team culture. As our young program continues to grow, the leadership of our captains has escalated and evolved in a tremendous way."
Wilson, entering her second season as a Duke captain, has been with the Blue Devils since the beginning. The senior transferred from James Madison after her freshman year and has fit right at home at Duke. In her first season as a Blue Devil, Wilson posted a .371 average with 62 hits and 35 RBI, all the highest in single season in Duke history. Her first year in Durham resulted with All-ACC First Team recognition. A native of Mechanicsville, Va., Wilson made 50 appearances as a junior and led the team in slugging percentage (.467) and, thanks to a team-high 20 walks, on-base percentage (.377). Wilson was also named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District III Frist Team, ACC All-Academic Team and the ACC Honor Roll.
Abboud returns as a captain for the 2020 season. The lefty utility player has had two stellar years with the Blue Devils. In her first season in the Bull City, the freshman started all 56 games and earned All-ACC Freshman Team honors with
Peyton St. George, being the first two players to earn the honor in Duke history. Abboud's .310 clip put her third on the squad and her 17 multi-hit games were good enough for second on the team. Last season, her sophomore year, the Huntington Beach, Calif., native started all 56 Duke games at first base. She led Duke with a .993 fielding percentage while accumulating an ACC-leading 439 putouts. She finished the season with a .280 batting average, tallying 47 hits, 27 RBI, 19 runs and 10 doubles.
Davis was named a captain for the 2020 season after a stellar freshman season with the Blue Devils. In her first season in Durham, Davis appeared and started all 56 games at middle infield. She led the Duke offense with a .324 batting average and 61 hits. The Cerritos, Calf., native finished seventh in the ACC in stolen bases, going 24-for-25. Davis smacked five triples on the year, putting her in a tie for fourth in the league. She led the team with 15 multi-hit games, including four three-hit outings and one four-hit showing. In addition to excelling on the field, Davis was named All-ACC Academic Team and ACC Honor Roll.
"We can't say enough about the way these three young ladies work to build up and unify this team to embody our program's core values," Young added.
Duke's captains were selected during fall play, in which the Blue Devils finished 6-2. Team3 had ample opportunity to grow on and off the field, playing more true road contests in the fall than ever before with trips to UNC Wilmington, Campbell, UNC Greensboro and Tennessee.
