DURHAM, N.C. – Duke Softball head coach
Marissa Young announced the signing of six new additions to the Blue Devil program on Wednesday during National Signing Day.
The 2020 class is ranked 44th in the nation, per Extra Inning Softball. This mark ranks sixth in the ACC, behind No. 3 Florida State, No. 14 Clemson, No. 20 Notre Dame, No. 24 NC State, No. 29 Georgia Tech and No. 30 Virginia. Duke snatched one top-50 and two top-200 recruits in the class of 2020.
Highlighting the Duke class is the 35th-ranked recruit in the class,
Claire Davidson. The Lakewood Ranch, Fla., native joins the Blue Devils as after originally committing to Auburn before deciding on the Blue Devils. Davidson is a standout left-handed pitcher that is ranked as the No. 17 pitcher in the class. She showed her ability to dominate from the circle during her junior year of high school. Davidson appeared in 31 games last season, going 10-0 with two saves. Through 62 innings pitched, the First Team All-State selection gave up just five earned runs for a 0.56 ERA. In addition, she threw 71 strikeouts and just four walks. A true dual-threat, Davidson excelled at the plate with a .439 clip with 13 home runs. The lefty was the 2019 Miracle Sports Florida Pitcher of the Year at the Class 8A level and Second Team USA Today All-USA as a junior.
Next up for Duke is outfielder
Sarah Goddard. The Carmel, Ind., native plays on the 46th-ranked Indiana Magic Gold travel ball team that has two third-place finishes at PFG Nationals in the last three years. Last season for Carmel High School, the junior posted a .390 clip with a team-leading 20 runs, 22 RBI and 26 hits. Goddard notched eight doubles, one triple and three home runs on the season. She was named All-Conference, All-County and Team MVP as a junior.
Lillie Walker comes up next for Duke. A pitcher out of Inola, Okla., Walker joins the Blue Devils as the No. 112 pitcher in the class. The Inola High School standout recorded a senior season with a 1.088 ERA. She struck out 163 batters for the Longhorns and hit a .363 average at the plate. Walker was named All-District Pitcher of the Year and All-State Pitcher of the Year for her senior seasons. On the travel ball scene, Walker played pitcher and first base for the Tulsa Elite OKC 02 Wells. A dual athlete, Walker also plays center on the Inola basketball team and was named All-Conference during her junior season.
After a record-breaking time at Cor Jesu Academy,
Julia Boyet will don the Duke Blue and White next year. The St. Louis, Mo., native had a stellar senior season with a .416 average and .597 slugging percentage. Boyet tallied 32 hits, 11 doubles and 21 RBI. After four years at Cor Jesu, Boyet nearly completely rewrote the records. She finished her career first in career batting average (.468), RBI (101), hits (162), home runs (11), triples (10), doubles (34) and runs (109). She also set single-season records during her sophomore year with seven home runs, 58 hits, 35 RBI, 33 runs and 13 doubles. On the travel ball scene, Boyet and the Top Gun Academy Gold won the USSSA National Championships in 2017.
Next up for the Blue Devils,
Kelly Torres will make her way to the Bull City as part of the 2020 class. Torres produced a .368 average with 19 RBI and a .596 slugging percentage during her most recent high school season. Freshman year was the Davie, Fla., native's best season at the plate as she posted a .409 clip with a .636 slugging percentage. Torres was First team All-County during her sophomore and junior season. Her high school, American Heritage High School, went to the 6A State Championship two years in a row, her freshman and sophomore season. After dropping the final her freshman year, Torres' team was able to capture the title in 2018. On the travel ball scene, Torres has played for the Gold Coast Hurricanes for four years. During the summer of 2019, she averaged .427 with 28 RBI and .597 slugging.
Francesca Frelick rounds out the Duke 2020 class. The Lexington, Mass., native has been a standout for Austin Preparatory School during her four years with the program. Last season saw Frelick tally 48 hits, three home runs and a .560 batting average on the way to the first Division III Massachusetts State Championship in Austin Prep history. Frelick is a captain, three-time Catholic Conference League All-Star, three-time All-Scholastic and Massachusetts Division III Softball Athlete of the Year. A dual athlete, Frelick also plays on the Austin Prep ice hockey team as a defenseman. An Assistant Captain the last two seasons, she was a CCL All-Star and a member of the Boston Herald All-Scholastic Dream Team. In travel ball, Frelick has produced a .420 batting average for Polar Crush this fall.
All six Duke signees in the class of 2020 will be featured on GoDuke.com over the next six weeks to close out the 2019 calendar year, starting on the week of Nov. 18.
