BRIGHTON, MASS. – No. 17 Duke completed the conference series sweep over Boston College with a pair of run-rule victories Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils outscored the Eagles, 34-10, in the doubleheader at Harrington Athletics Village to earn their fourth series sweep of the season.
Redshirt junior
Jessica Oakland powered the offense, batting an explosive 8-for-8 on the day with eight RBI and three home runs in the two games. Senior
Aminah Vega also drove in eight runs during the twin bill, finishing 4-for-8 on the day.
Sophomore
Mallory Wheeler (9-5) and junior
Larissa Jacquez (4-4) earned the wins inside the circle. Wheeler worked the full five innings of the opening game, allowing four runs off eight hits for the ninth complete game of her career. Jacquez tossed the final 3.1 innings in jg?relief in game two, limiting the Eagles to just one run off two hits with a game-high three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
- Oakland sparked the offense in the top of the first, sending a solo home run over the center field wall to give the Blue Devils an early lead.
- Duke posted back-to-back five-run frames to stretch the gap to 11-0 in the third. Vega and freshman Gabriella Shadek each sent out a three-run shot to guide the offense.
- The Blue Devils' offense exploded again in the top of the fourth inning, plating six runs off five hits and a Boston College error to extend their advantage to 17-0. Oakland sent out her second home run of the contest with a three-run blast to center field, scoring senior Aleyah Terrell and Vega.
- The Eagles put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth, placing runners on the corners with a base hit and dropped third strike. Another base hit through the infield knocked in the first Boston College run and Janis Espinoza followed with a three-run homer before the Blue Devils could grab the final out.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
- Oakland recorded her third home run of the day, a two-run shot to left field, to open the scoring in game two. The long ball brought in senior D'Auna Jennings after she reached on a walk and stole second.
- Boston College's Emma Knight kept the Eagles close with a solo shot over the left field wall in the home half, cutting the gap to 2-1.
- Senior KK Mathis and freshman Adelyn Matthews drew walks in the top of the second. Mathis scored on Jennings' base hit to the right field gap and Matthews came home on a BC throwing error. Vega followed with an infield single to bring Jennings in and push Duke ahead, 5-1.
- The Eagles started to gain momentum on offense in the bottom of the second, stringing together five hits to push five runs across the plate and take their first lead of the weekend, 6-5.
- The Blue Devils answered back with a seven-run frame in the top of the third to move back in front, 12-6. The inning was highlighted by RBI knocks from Oakland, graduate student Tyrina Jones and sophomore Layla Lamar.
- Duke continued putting pressure on the Boston College defense in the fifth, adding five runs off seven hits, including a pair of home runs from Vega and Shadek, to secure the run-rule victory, 17-6.
NOTES
- Oakland recorded the sixth multi-home run game of her career during the opening game. She now owns 46 career long balls.
- Shadek recorded her sixth career home run after homering in every game of the series.
- Vega extended her hitting streak to a team-high 19 games.
- The Blue Devils collected their seventh run-rule victory of the year.
- Duke moves to 14-0 all-time against Boston College. Â
UP NEXT
The Blue Devils will close out the regular season at home, hosting Charlotte in non-conference action Tuesday night before welcoming Clemson to Smith Family Stadium for a three-game series beginning Friday.
