DURHAM, N.C. – The nation's 35th ranked player in the class of 2020 is headed to the Bull City, as Duke softball head coach
Marissa Young announced the signing of left-handed pitcher
Claire Davidson.
A native of Bradenton, Fla., Davidson will join Duke's squad once wrapping up her career at Lakewood Ranch High School. Last season, her junior season, was her first year at Lakewood Ranch after playing her first two years at West Potomac High School in Alexandria, Va.
Davidson's junior campaign set her apart from the rest as she sported a 10-0 record with two saves. The lefty threw 61.2 innings with just five earned runs and a 0.57 ERA. Davidson also had 71 K's versus only four walks allowed. At the plate, she hit .439 with 13 home runs, 47 RBI and a 1.436 OPS.
Following the successful junior year, Davidson received an abundance of recognitions: Florida All-State, Florida 8A Pitcher of the Year, HT Preps Softball Pitcher of the Year, Florida Gatorade Player of the Year Nominee, All-Region and All-Conference.
Prior to her time at Lakewood Ranch, Davidson played two years at West Potomac. Before her sophomore season was cut short due to injury, she tallied an 8-1 record with 63 strikeouts in 53.1 innings pitched. At the plate, Davidson held a .594 batting average with a .683 on-base percentage.
Davidson broke on to the high school softball scene at West Potomac with a strong inaugural season. She threw 151 innings while tallying 200 K's, a 1.483 ERA and a 17-7 record. Davidson hit .392 at the plate with 29 RBI and three bombs. The lefty pitcher was named a Washington, D.C. All-Met Honorable Mention, All-Region, Conference MVP and All-Conference.
On the travel ball scene, Davidson plays for the Tampa Mustangs TJ based in Tampa, Fla. The Mustangs are ranked fourth in the Extra Elite Eighty 18U Club Rankings after a stellar 2018-19 season. The Tampa-based club finished third at the USSSA Elite Select World Championships and the PGF 18U Premier Nationals last summer. Prior to 10th grade, Davidson played for the Vienna Stars in Virginia for four years.
The daughter of Daryl and Peggy Davidson, Claire was born on Aug. 22, 2002, in Alexandria, Va. She has one older brother, Sam. Off the field, Davidson excels in the classroom as she carries a 4.4 GPA and is a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist.
