DURHAM, N.C. – With two years under its belt, the Duke softball program announced its 2020 schedule for the program's third year of play on Wednesday.
The Blue Devils will participate in 56 games during the regular season. Duke hosts 28 homes games to highlight the 2020 slate, along with 22 games on the road and six games at neutral sites. The schedule features 11 teams that participated in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, 21 teams that are ranked in the top 100 end-of-year NCAA RPI and 13 new opponents for Duke.
"We are excited for yet another year of a very competitive schedule," Duke softball head coach
Marissa Young said. "Almost half of our games are against top-100 teams or NCAA postseason teams. Team3 wants to play the best of the best and compete at a high level."
Duke will host ACC series against Notre Dame (Feb. 28- March 1), Florida State (March 13-15), Louisville (March 27-29) and Georgia Tech (April 17-19). On the road within conference play, the Blue Devils travel to Pittsburgh (March 20-22), Boston College (April 3-5), Virginia Tech (April 10-12) and North Carolina (April 24-26). Duke will face two ACC opponents in non-conference games, first Clemson on Feb. 7 and then NC State on Feb. 26.
The Blue Devils longest home stretch spans from Feb. 28- March 15. During that time, Duke will host 14 games at the Duke Softball Stadium. To close out the season, Duke will play 13 of its last 16 regular-season games on the road before traveling to Louisville for the start of the postseason at the ACC Tournament.

2019 NCAA Participants On the Horizon...
Over the course of the 2020 season, Duke will face 11 teams that participated in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Those 11 teams, Florida State, Texas, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Lipscomb, Notre Dame, Louisville, North Carolina, Longwood, Fordham and Weber State, combined for a 431-202 record last season.
Florida State and Texas advanced the furthest in the 2019 NCAA Tournament of Duke's 2020 opponents by making it out of their regions, but both teams fell in the Super Regionals.
Sunshine State Calling...
The Blue Devils open year three in Orlando, Fla. at a tournament hosted on the campus of Central Florida. Duke will play five games through the weekend with two games on Friday (Feb. 7), two on Saturday (Feb. 8) and one on Sunday (Feb. 9).
On Friday, Duke will face newcomer Clemson in the Tiger's first game in program history at 12:30 p.m., before facing Indiana in the afternoon at 3 p.m. Saturday's slate features St. John's at 3 p.m. followed by the hosts UCF at 6 p.m. Duke wraps up its time in Orlando with a 1:30 p.m. date with UCF on Sunday.
ACC/B10 Challenge...
Duke hosts the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Durham for a third consecutive year. After sweeping the side in year one, the Blue Devils went 1-3 in year two. This year's event will feature Duke and Syracuse from the ACC and Indiana and Rutgers of the Big 10.
On the opening day, Feb. 14, Duke will face Indiana at 5 p.m and again at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will have the Blue Devils playing against Rutgers at 11:30 p.m. Duke will wrap up the weekend against Rutgers on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Duke Invitational...
Duke Softball Stadium will be the site for 15 games over March 6-8 during the 2020 Duke Invitational. The Blue Devils first opponent of the weekend is Fordham at 7:30 p.m. Duke is slated for two games on Saturday, first against Kent State at 2:30 p.m. before Lafayette at 5 p.m. The Blue Devil's close out the weekend with a double-header against Gardner Webb at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Texas Tournament...
From Feb. 21-23, the Blue Devils will travel to Texas for the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas. Over the weekend, the Blue Devils will play four games, three of which being against teams that ended last season ranked in the top 50 in the RPI.
On Friday, Duke will open the weekend taking on Lipscomb at 9 a.m. Duke will have plenty of time to rest between games before following that with a 7 p.m. game against Weber State. Saturday, the Blue Devils open with North Dakota State at 2 p.m. before challenging the host Texas at 7:30 p.m.
Nice to Meet You...
The Blue Devils will take on 10 new opponents during the 2020 season.
In the first weekend of play at the event hosted by UCF, Duke will play Clemson and St. John's for the first time. The match up with the Tigers will be Clemson's first softball game in program history. Later in the weekend, Duke will take the diamond against the Big East's St. John's.
Duke will face three new opponents at the tournament in the Lone Star State: Lipscomb, Weber State and Texas. All three teams were NCAA Tournament teams a season ago. Texas leads the slate with a 46-17 ranking 11th in the last RPI poll of the season.
Out of conference, Young's squad also plays Fordham, Lafayette and Gardner Webb, all first-time opponents, in the Duke Invitational from March 6-8.
Familiar Foes...
Four of Duke's opponents in the 2020 season will be teams that the Blue Devils held exhibition games with during the 2019 fall season. Duke hosts midweek games with Campbell (Feb. 19), NC Central (Feb. 25) and UNC Greensboro (March 25) and travels to Charlotte for a double-header (March 18).
In fall play, the Blue Devils topped Campbell 14-9, NC Central 8-3 and Charlotte 10-0 and fell to UNC Greensboro 3-4 in a tight matchup in Greensboro, N.C.
ACC Openers...
For the first time in program history, Duke opens the ACC season with Notre Dame. The 2019 NCAA Tournament participants will come to Durham the weekend of Feb. 28- March 1 and play at Duke Softball Stadium. Friday's game will be at 5 p.m. followed by Saturday and Sunday contests at 1 p.m.
The Blue Devils hold a 3-2 record all-time against the Fighting Irish, with two meetings coming last season in Duke's first and last games of the year. In the season opener, Duke topped Notre Dame 7-3 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico but Notre Dame got revenge in the first round of the ACC Tournament, winning 2-9 in Tallahassee, Fla. The first time Duke faced Notre Dame was in April 2018 as the Blue Devils took the series 2-1 in South Bend, Ind.
