Duke Closes First Day of Winter Classic

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team opened the first day of the Duke Winter Classic Sunday in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Through one day of the individual competition, the Blue Devils registered four singles victories and two doubles wins as there was no team score for any team.

Duke started the day off with three singles wins in its individual competition against NC State. Sophomore Chloe Beck defeated Alana Smith (6-4, 6-3) while redshirt sophomore Georgia Drummy took down Jaeda Daniel (7-6 [3], 6-3) to register her first victory as a Blue Devil. Senior Kelly Chen rounded out the singles wins with a 6-2, 6-2 dub over Adriana Reami.

The Blue Devils moved onto doubles action as duo Margaryta Bilokin and Meible Chi defeated Tenika McGiffin and Carly Briggs of Tennessee (6-4) before Beck and rookie Karolina Berankova secured a quick 6-0 win over Tennessee's Daria Kuczer and Esther Adeshina.

The day concluded with the second flight of singles as Chi defeated Rebeka Mertena (2-6, 6-4, 6-3) of Tennessee.

Action in Durham will resume Monday at 11:15 a.m.
