Finesilvers Sweep Titles at Battle at The Citadel

RESULTS

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Duke wrestling program came away with two individual titles on Saturday, as brothers Josh Finesilver and Matt Finesilver took first place at 149 and 174 pounds, respectively, at the Battle at The Citadel, to lead the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils finished third overall with 146 points, behind No. 5 NC State (256.5) and Air Force (221) and joined NC State as the only teams with multiple individual champions.

At 149 pounds, No. 12 ranked Josh Finesilver entered as the number one seed and started quickly, with back-to-back wins via fall in under two minutes each time. Finesilver would join the top four seeds in the semifinals, where he matched up against fourth seeded Reid Stewart (Presbyterian) but handled the test with a comfortable 7-0 decision.

Drawing the second-seeded Dylan Martinez of Air Force, Finesilver faced a difficult task, but held firm. Martinez scored a takedown to open the bout, but Finesilver answered with an escape and takedown to take a 3-2 lead after the first period. The Greenwood Village, Colo., native built a 6-2 lead off another takedown and traded blows with Martinez throughout the remainder of the matchup, ultimately securing an 11-8 decision.

Not be outdone, No. 8 Matt Finesilver made his long-awaited return to action and did not disappoint, winning his first bout 18-0 by technical fall. After an 11-4 decision in the quarterfinal, Finesilver would not drop another point the rest of the tournament. He won 13-0 over Air Force's Harlan Steffensmeier by default at 4:33 and won a tough 6-0 decision over another Falcon, Sam Wolf to secure his first collegiate title since winning the Hokie Open in 2018.

Sophomore Logan Agin was another standout performer, earning third place in the 125-pound bracket. Agin earned two wins on the day, with one via fall in the quarterfinal over The Citadel's Jacob Simmons and the other via technical fall over Dylan Montgomery (Belmont Abbey) to secure third place. Junior Bryson Neace (165 pounds) and redshirt senior Kaden Russell (197 pounds) took home fourth place in their respective brackets.

The Blue Devils will be back in action on Nov. 14, when they head to Boone, N.C., to compete in the Mountaineer Invitational, hosted by Appalachian State.
