DURHAM – Senior
Chris Crabtree went 5-for-5 and a double shy of the cycle to lead the Blue Devils past Virginia Tech, 11-6, in game one of the three-game series on Friday night at Jack Coombs Field.
After trailing 4-1 after the third inning, Duke (22-20, 11-17 ACC) scored 10 consecutive runs, including eight runs in the eighth inning to power past the Hokies and take a 11-4 lead. Crabtree's career-high five hits, two triples, a home run, four runs and two RBIs led the Blue Devils at the plate. Junior

Chad Knight also enjoyed solid days in the box, ach recording three hits and an RBI.
Junior
Jack Carey started on the mound for the Blue Devils, putting in a career-high seven innings of work for the second consecutive outing. The Summit, N.J., native allowed four runs on eight hits while fanning seven. Carey shut down the Hokies' offense after the third inning, allowing just two singles while striking out five over his final four frames.
Virginia Tech (27-18, 16-15 ACC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring two quick runs in the top of the first inning. Duke halved the deficit in the second inning after Crabtree led off the inning with a triple down the left field line before scoring on a single up the middle by sophomore
Chad Knight.
The Hokies would add another pair of runs in the third inning to increase their lead, 4-1, but Duke wouldn't be out yet. An RBI double from senior
Joey Loperfido plated a run in the fourth to cut the Virginia Tech lead to two.
In the bottom of the sixth, a jaw-dropping home run from Crabtree that traveled 464 feet pulled the Blue Devils within a run, 4-3.
Duke rattled off eight runs in the eighth inning, matching its season high for a single inning. Five consecutive batters reached base to begin the inning as the Blue Devils utilized six hits, including a leadoff triple by senior
Michael Rothenberg, and two errors to plate eight and take a 11-4 lead.
A ninth-inning rally by the Hokies plated two, but the visitors were unable to overcome the deficit as Duke took game one of the series, 11-6.
Sophomores
Jimmy Loper entered in the eighth inning, retiring the side in just six pitches to earn the win.
Duke and Virginia Tech return to the diamond on Saturday at 1 p.m. for game two of the series at Jack Coombs Field.
Postgame Notes:
- Crabtree scored a career-high four runs in the game.
- Crabtree recorded five hits, becoming the first Blue Devil to do so since Zack Kone at Miami on April 16, 2016.
- Crabtree became the second Blue Devil to record two triples in a game this season, joining teammate Murray.
- Loper's win on the mound was his first of the season and second of his career.
- Duke's trio of triples matched a season-high, last done against Campbell on April 13.
