EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Maryland attackman Jared Bernhardt scored five goals and seven points overall to lift the No. 3 seed Terrapins and hand second-seeded Duke a 14-5 loss in the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Semifinals Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field.
The Blue Devils conclude the 2021 season with a 14-3 overall record and as ACC co-champions. It was Duke's 13th appearance in Championship Weekend and the 11th time in the past 14 seasons. Maryland improves to 15-0 and will play Virginia for the national title on Memorial Day.
Duke was led offensively by
Michael Sowers and
Dyson Williams with two goals apiece. Defensively,
JT Giles-Harris registered one caused turnover to break the Duke career mark of 88 held by
Luke Duprey.
The game got off to a slow start offensively for both teams with the game tied at 1-1 with two minutes to go. Maryland attackman Jared Bernhardt threw one in with 1:46 left in the opening period to give the Terrapins a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.
Duke and Maryland started the second quarter by trading goals before the Terrapins went on a four-goal run to take an 8-3 lead into halftime.
With the Terrapins leading 4-2,
Michael Sowers beat the shot clock to pull within one with 5:20 to play in the second frame. Maryland responded with four unanswered goals in a span of 1:48 to take the five-goal lead into the locker room.
All three goals came from different players in the opening 30 minutes as Sowers
, Brennan O'Neill and
Dyson Williams each scored for Duke.
Duke forced Maryland into 11 turnovers, including eight in the first quarter, but couldn't capitalize on the Terrapins' miscues. The Blue Devils had seven turnovers of their own in the first half.
Duke never found an offensive rhythm in the second half as Maryland tacked on three more goals to extend the lead to 11-3 before Williams stopped Duke's scoreless stretch at 20:12.
Maryland goaltender Logan McNaney was outstanding between the pipes with 17 saves and only four goals allowed.
Maryland tacked on three more fourth quarter goals en route to the 14-5 victory.
The Terrapins won the faceoff battle, 12-10, including going 9-of-13 in the first half. Graduate student
Dan O'Connell came off the bench late in the game and won 6-of-9 restarts. In goal,
Mike Adler had 11 saves.
Notes
Michael Sowers finishes his illustrious career with 158 goals and 225 assists for 383 career points. He ranks second in NCAA history in points and assists and fifth in points per game (5.98).
Duke finished with at least 14 wins in a season for the 11th time in program history, while the three losses are tied for the second fewest.
