WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The sixth-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team secured a 23-5 victory over William & Mary Friday evening in Williamsburg, Va.
With the victory, the Blue Devils remain undefeated (3-0) and are outscoring their opponents 70-13. Duke dominated the final three quarters as they outscored the Tribe 15-2.
Thirteen different Blue Devils registered points in the win, led by graduate student
Catriona Barry and sophomore
Katie DeSimone with six (5G, 1A) and five (4G, 1A) points, respectively. Barry's five goals today tie a career high that was set last weekend at Elon. Barry and DeSimone have also registered a hat trick in each game this season and combine for 36 points (31G, 5A).
Senior
Anna Callahan also notched a career-high three goals, while
Maddie Jenner,
Katie Keller and
Lexi Schmalz netted two goals each.
Olivia Carner and
Eva Greco also dished two assists each.
All tied up at 3 with eight minutes left in the first, senior
Anna Callahan gave Duke the edge off a nice shot just inside the eight-meter mark. William & Mary attempted to equalize with a nice look inside, but senior goalkeeper
Sophia LeRose was right there to close the door. Duke turned its defense into offense as graduate student
Katie Cosgrove caused the turnover just in front of Duke's cage and pushed the tempo quickly as Landry found
Katie Keller for an easy shot to the cage. Duke made it a four-point game seconds before the end of the quarter as Carner found Jenner cutting right in front of the goal.
Through one quarter of action, Duke held a 7-3 lead as all seven goals were from different Blue Devils.
Duke outscored William & Mary 7-1 in the second quarter. The Tribe's lone goal came with 1:22 remaining in the half off a free-position attempt. Barry led the way for Duke with three goals in the second, bringing her season total to 14.
Duke led 14-4 at half and outshot William & Mary 30-9.
The Blue Devils continued full throttle in the second half. DeSimone tacked on two more goals while junior
Virginia Oursler recorded her first goal of 2022 off of Barry's feed. Through three frames, Duke led 20-4.
Caroline DeBellis,
Katie Cronin and
Ainsley Thurston rounded out Duke's scoring in the fourth quarter. With her two points today, Cronin is just two away from reaching the 100-point plateau.
Sophia LeRose got her third start between the pipes this afternoon and recorded three saves. Freshman
Kennedy Everson and
Chase Henriquez also saw time and posted one save each.
Duke won the ground ball game (21-15) and caused turnovers (12-3), led by
Olivia Carner and
Kay Conway with two ground balls and two caused turnovers each.
Duke was nearly perfect on clears (15-of-16) and tallied 18 draw controls, led by Jenner's 11.
The Tribe was led by Belle Martire with three goals and an assist for four points.
Duke will close out the weekend Sunday with a 1 p.m., contest at High Point.
