No. 12 Duke Collects 6-1 Road Win at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – In its first dual road match of the season, 12th-ranked Duke women's tennis dispatched Furman (4-3) with a 6-1 victory on Saturday morning at the Mickel Tennis Center.

The Blue Devils (4-1) scored two victories to collect the opening doubles point in just over 30 minutes. Senior Georgia Drummy and sophomore Karolina Berankova made easy work of Julia Adams/Ellie Schoppe in flight one (6-0), while freshman Ellie Coleman and graduate student Eliza Omirou secured the 1-0 lead after topping Jess Dawson/Sara Snyder, 6-2, in flight three.

Junior Chloe Beck and freshman Emma Jackson were down 3-4 to Madison Dillon and Ellie Schulson when play was halted on court two.

As the action shifted to singles, Duke quickly collected three singles points via straight-set wins from the 15th-ranked Beck, senior Margaryta Bilokin and No. 73 Drummy. Beck was the first Blue Devil to earn a singles win as she blew past Dillon (6-1,6-3) in flight two. Drummy followed suit in flight one and picked up her fourth ranked win of the young season with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of No. 45 Adams. Bilokin clinched the contest for Duke on court four, beating the 65th-ranked Snyder 6-3, 6-2.

The remaining courts played out. Schoppe got the Paladins on the board with her win over No. 26 Jackson at number three. Jackson put up a great fight as she battled back from a first-set loss to take set two (6-2), but was ultimately held off by her Furman adversary, 1-0 (11-9), in a tightly contested super tiebreaker third set.

Playing in flight five, the 48th-ranked Coleman grabbed another point for Duke as the freshman came from behind to take down Dawson 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3). Berankova closed out competition for the Blue Devils and recorded a 7-6 (5), 6-3 dub over Schulscon at the sixth spot.
