DURHAM – The seventh-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team captured a 21-10 victory over Penn in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 8-1 and stay undefeated at home as the Quakers drop to 2-4 overall.
Duke's offense was led by sophomore
Katie DeSimone with a tied for career-high seven points off five goals and two assists. Four additional Blue Devils tallied hat tricks, spearheaded by
Olivia Carner's three-goal performance.
Carner tallied eight points in two games while DeSimone added 10 in a highly successful weekend for the Blue Devils.
The two squads traded goals to start the contest even at two despite Penn striking first just 30 ticks into the game. Even at two, Aly Feeley connected on consecutive free-position attempts to give the Quakers a narrow two-goal lead (4-2) after the first 15.
Duke's offense erupted in the second frame and did not let up the rest of the game as it outscored Penn 19-6 over the final 45 minutes.
Duke took a 6-5 lead at halftime from second-quarter goal contributions from DeSimone, Carner,
Anna Callahan and
Lexi Schmalz.
Following the intermission, both teams settled into their offensive rhythms, specifically Duke with seven goals from seven different players.
The Blue Devils jumped out to an 11-5 lead with five goals in under five minutes. After trading the next four scores, Penn tacked on two from free-position shots to cut into Duke's lead and make it 13-9.
During the final 15 minutes, the Blue Devils outscored the Quakers 8-1 for a final score of 21-10. Penn tallied its final goal of the contest
at 14:13 in the fourth quarter before it was all Duke the rest of the way. DeSimone tallied two goals and a dime, Barry connected on her first goal of the game with just over one minute to play and
Virginia Oursler collected her second goal this season .
Duke's defense locked in and was led by junior
Cubby Biscardi with a career-high four caused turnovers. She also added a draw control and a ground ball in her solid performance. Senior
Maddie Jenner tallied 15 draw controls and two goals and is just 22 draw controls away from breaking the Duke career record.
Senior
Sophia LeRose earned her ninth start in goal and picked up eight saves.
The Quakers were led by Feeley with three points off two goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Krissy Kowalski tallied eight saves.
Duke next welcomes Louisville (
March 17) and Davidson (
March 20) to Durham. Thursday's contest against the Cardinals will be broadcast on ACCN
before Sunday's 2 p.m., opening draw against the Wildcats.
