COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Thirteenth-ranked Duke captured a 17-12 victory over 25th-ranked Johns Hopkins in NCAA Tournament first round action Friday evening in College Park, Md.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 16-3 overall.
Three Blue Devils registered hat tricks, with sophomore
Katie Keller posting a career-high six points to help the Blue Devils advance to the second round. Four additional Blue Devils reeled in four-point performances as
Katie DeSimone,
Olivia Carner,
Catriona Barry and
Abby Landry demonstrated Duke's balanced offense. Duke showcased its offensive diversity with 11 assists on 17 goals, led by Keller, Landry and Barry's three apiece.
Friday's game highlighted much success within the Blue Devil program, including senior
Maddie Jenner breaking the NCAA single season draw control record with her 10 draws today. Jenner currently owns 229 draw controls this season, surpassing the previous record of 224.
Senior goalkeeper
Sophia LeRose was stellar between the pipes for the Blue Devils, tallying a career-high 17 saves in 60 minutes. Her 17 saves are good for the third-best performance in program history.
Defensively, the Blue Devils' stepped up big, spearheaded by graduate student
Natalie Kahn with a career-high four ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior
Cubby Biscardi picked up a team-leading two caused turnovers.
A big first half proved to be crucial as the Blue Devils put on the gas early. Duke wasted no time getting on the board and built an early 4-0 lead in the first six minutes of the contest. Landry got Duke's offense rolling with two assists and a goal during that span before the two squads traded the next four scores. Following the opening 15, Duke led 6-3 with six goals from seven shots.
Duke tacked on one more (7-3) less than 30 ticks into the second quarter before Hopkins pulled within two (7-5) from two goals in 10 seconds.
Much like it's done all season, Duke scored in spurts and made it 10-5 with goal contributions from Carner, DeBellis and Keller as Landry dished her third dime of the early contest. The Blue Jays found the back of the cage to pull back within four (10-6) before Jenner sparked Duke's 3-0 spurt to finish the quarter. Behind Jenner's two markers, the Blue Devils tallied three goals in 24 seconds to extend the lead to seven at halftime (13-6). Hopkins knocked on the door numerous times with seven shots in the second, but Duke was right there as LeRose made six saves in the first half, including three in one possession.
Following the break, Johns Hopkins regrouped and put together a 3-0 run to make it 13-9 with 7:45 remaining in the third quarter. Duke answered to put the game away when Keller found DeSimone for her 58th goal of the season. Carner then cashed in on her third goal of the day with 4:43 remaining in the third.
Leading 15-10 at the start of the final frame, the two teams traded four goals to end the contest.
The Blue Devils will take on No. 2 Maryland Sunday at 2:30 p.m., on ESPN+. Duke last met Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago and captured a 13-12 victory in Durham.
Johns Hopkins was led by Shelby Harrison, Madison McPherson and Abbey Hurlbrink with three points each.
