Having played five straight games decided in single digits, Duke is back in action Saturday afternoon to battle Georgia Tech at McCamish Pavilion.
Mike Monaco and Randolph Childress are on the call for ACC Network, while David Shumate and John Roth broadcast the game on the Blue Devils Sports Network from LEARFIELD
The game caps a grueling month of January that saw the young Blue Devils play five road games in the span of 24 days -- included in that stretch are narrow setbacks at Clemson and Virginia Tech -- both games in which Duke held second-half leads.
Freshman Kyle Filipowski, staking his claim as the ACC Rookie of the Year, leads all conference freshmen in scoring, rebounding and double-doubles. He has 10 doubles-doubles, including a monster current four-game stretch averaging 23.0 points and 13.3 boards.
The six-time ACC Rookie of the Week, Filipowski is fifth in the ACC, 28th nationally and leads all power conference freshmen in rebounds (9.5). His 10 double-doubles are tied for third in the ACC and lead all D-I freshmen.
Filipowski is averaging 16.6 points and 10.0 rebounds in ACC play -- one of just three players averaging 15-10 in conference play -- UNC's Armando Bacot and Clemson's Hunter Tyson.
Freshman guard Tyrese Proctor has scored double digits in four straight games, averaging 13.0 points and a 3-to-1 assist-turnover ratio in that stretch. He is coming off 10 points, seven assists, 1 turnover and four rebounds in 31 minutes at Virginia Tech.
Duke has out-rebounded 16 of its first 20 opponents and is 13-3 this season when holding an advantage on the glass. Duke is 11-3 when leading in offensive rebounding.
The ACC's best rebounding team, Duke ranks fifth nationally in rebound margin (+8.6), ninth in offensive rebounds (13.6) and 17th in rebounds per game (39.5) -- leading the conference in each category. Duke has not finished as the ACC's team leader in rebounds since 1998-99.
Duke has held 17 of 20 teams below their season scoring average, ranking second in the ACC and 46th nationally in scoring defense (64.2).
Tech and Duke are first and second, respectively, in the ACC in three-point defense.
The Blue Devils have not dropped consecutive games this season and are 27-3 following a loss since 2016-17 (not including the COVID season in 2020-21).
On This Date: Jan. 28
Duke is 15-5 all-time when playing on January 28 and has won three straight and four the last five on this date.
Duke last played on this date in 2020 -- a 79-67 win over Pitt at Cameron Indoor.
Just once previously have Duke and GT met on this date -- a win by No. 8 Duke over No. 13 Tech, 88-86, at Cameron Indoor in 1990.
About Georgia Tech
Saturday's game at Georgia Tech is the only meeting between ACC rivals this season.
Duke and Georgia Tech are the league's top two teams in both offensive rebounding and three-point percentage defense.
Miles Kelly leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring as the team's lone player averaging in double figures at 13.4 ppg.
Kelly has connected on 46-of-127 (.362) from three-point range this season, ranking eighth in the ACC in made threes per game (2.3).
Deivon Smith ranks third in ACC in assist-turnover ratio.
The Blue Devils have won nine of the last 10 over the Yellow Jackets and lead the all-time series, 76-24.
Duke won last year's game in Durham -- the 100th all-time meeting in the series, 69-57, behind 17 points and 11 rebounds from Paolo Banchero and 10 points and 14 boards from Mark Williams.
Duke dropped its last visit to Atlanta -- 81-77 in overtime -- on March 2, 2021.
Filipowski's Monster Stretch: 23.0 Points, 13.3 Rebounds Over Last Four Games
Kyle Filipowski is the six-time ACC Rookie of the Week, winning the award in each of the last two weeks after becoming the first freshman in league history to open a season with four-consecutive Rookie of the Week honors.
He enters Saturday's game at Georgia Tech having scored 92 points with 53 rebounds over the last four games -- the most productive four-game points/rebounds stretch since Marvin Bagley III in 2017-18. Over the last four games, which included 28 points and a career-best 15 rebounds vs. Pitt and a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds at Virginia Tech, Filipowski is averaging 23.0 points and 13.3 boards.
He is just the third Duke freshmen all-time to have at least 28-15 in a game, joining Bagley, who did it four times in 2017-18, and Jabari Parker, who did it once in 2013-14.
His 10 double-doubles are top-15 nationally and lead all Division-I freshmen, while his 9.5 rebounds per game are fifth in the ACC and the most by a power conference freshman.
Filipowski is the first Blue Devil since Bagley in 2017-18 record at least three consecutive games with at least 17 points and 14 rebounds -- that streak was snapped with his 29-10 performance at Virginia Tech.
Over Duke's last six games – which has included four road games – Filipowski is averaging 20.2 points and 11.7 rebounds and shooting .438 in that stretch.
Rare Rookie Company in 2022-23
Freshman Kyle Filipowski is averaging 16.6 points and 10.0 rebounds in ACC play, joining two other players -- North Carolina's Armando Bacot and Clemson's Hunter Tyson (both of whom are seniors) -- averaging at least 15-10 in conference play this season.
He is the only power conference freshman averaging at least 15-10 in conference play this season.
Filipowski and Ohio State's Brice Sensabaugh (Big Ten) are the only freshmen in power conferences to be their conference's respective freshman leader in each for points, rebounds and double-doubles.
He is one of four freshman on the 25-player midseason watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, joining Kansas' Grady Dick, Baylor's Keyonte George and Alabama's Brandon Miller.
Aussie Proctor Coming On
Freshman guard Tyrese Proctor was originally committed to Duke's 2023 class, but made the decision to reclassify for this season in June 2022.
The five-star guard, who hails from Sydney, Australia, is one of 14 known foreign-born Blue Devils, including one of three from Australia (Jack White, who played from 2016-20, and Kyrie Irving, who played in 2011).
In the absence of junior starting guard Jeremy Roach (who missed three consecutive games with a toe injury), Proctor stepped up to handle point guard duties. Finding his groove over the last four games, Proctor is Duke's second-leading scorer in that stretch with at 13.0 points -- double figures in each game -- with 15 points and five turnovers in the span.
He scored 14 in the win over Pitt, followed that with a career-high 17 points at Clemson, and had 10 points with seven assists and one turnover at Virginia Tech, including a clutch game-tying three in the final 40 seconds before the Hokies pulled out the win.
The freshman owns a 2.17 assist-turnover ratio in conference play, which would rank top 10 in the ACC but falls one assist short of qualifying.
Proctor became Duke's first Aussie-born player to post a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists vs. Delaware.
Blue Devils Allowing 64.2 Points -- Second in ACC and 46th Nationally in Scoring Defense
Duke is second in the ACC and 46th nationally in scoring defense, yielding just 64.2 points per game. Fourteen of the first 20 opponents have been held to less than 70 points, while seven have failed to score more than 60.
Duke has held 17 of the 20 opponents to below their season scoring average -- Duke is 14-3 in those games. Seven scored their then-season low for points, including holding Iowa to a then-season-low 62, Xavier to 64 (20 points below its average) and Miami to a season-low tying 66 (12 off its scoring average).
Duke's strong defensive numbers come against a schedule rated 21st-toughest versus opponent offenses (per KenPom).
Ten opponents this season have failed to top 30 percent from behind the arc, as Duke is second in the ACC and 55th nationally in three-point defense (.306).
Four of the ACC's most explosive scorers -- Miami's Isaiah Wong, Clemson's Hunter Tyson and Chase Hunter and Pitt's Blake Hinson -- were bottled up by the Blue Devils over the last four games to the tune of 29 combined points (7.3 per player) on 8-of-32 (.250) combined shooting from the field and 4-of-14 (.286) from three-point range.
Duke: NCAA's Top 20 for Rebounds, Offensive Rebounds and Rebound Margin
Duke has been among the nation's best rebounding teams this season, ranking fourth nationally in offensive rebounding percentage (38.4), tied for fourth nationally in rebound margin (+8.6), ninth in offensive rebounds per game (13.7) and 17th in total rebounds per game (39.5) -- leads the ACC in each category.
Duke is one of five teams ranked inside the NCAA's top 20 for each rebound margin, offensive rebounds and total rebounds, joining Alabama, Tennessee, Houston and UAB.
Leading the ACC in rebounding, Duke is looking to finish as the conference's leader in total rebounds per game for the first time since 1998-99.
The Blue Devils have out-rebounded 16 of their first 20 opponents, including nine by double-digit margins. Duke opened the season with a double-digit rebound margin in each of the first six games -- the program record for longest such streak (at any point in a season). Duke had five-game streaks in 2017-18, 1998-98, 1962-63 and 1960-61.
Since the start of the 2020-21 season, Duke is 45-7 when out-rebounding its opponent (13-3 this season).
Offensive rebounding has been a significant strength, with Duke totaling 20+ on the offensive glass four times already -- the Blue Devils hadn't had more than 19 offensive boards in any game over each of the last two seasons.
Duke is +107 (262-155) in second-chance scoring this season and Duke is 10-4 in games this season when leading in second-chance scoring.
Individually, freshman Kyle Filipowski is 28th nationally and fifth in the ACC in rebounds (9.5) and leads all power conference freshmen. Graduate Ryan Young is 64th nationally (fifth in the ACC) in offensive rebounds (2.9), while Filipowski is fourth in the ACC in offensive rebounds (2.95).
Duke and Georgia Tech are first and second, respectively in the ACC in offensive rebounding.
Bounce-Back Ability
Duke is 27-3 following a loss since the 2016-17 season, not dropping consecutive games since 2019-20 -- not including the 2020-21 COVID season.
Over the last 25 seasons, Duke has lost by 20+ points in the regular season just six times, and is undefeated in the game to follow -- including the Jan. 7th win at Boston College.
Duke's Three-Point Streak
Duke has connected on at least one three-pointer in 1,173 straight games, the second-longest streak nationally.
It has been more than 30 years since Duke was held without a three-point field goal -- Dec. 30, 1989, versus Hawai'i.
