Duke Falls to No. 15 Rutgers, Cal Poly in Season Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Duke wrestling team fell to No. 15 Rutgers and Cal Poly in its season-opening duals Friday night at Mott Athletics Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

HOW IT HAPPENED
•   Duke opened the doubleheader against a tough No. 15 Rutgers, facing nationally-ranked opponents in eight of its 10 matches.
•   Freshman Peter Chacon put up a strong showing in his opening bout, but dropped in an 8-4 decision. Senior Jack Wimmer also stayed competitive with his Rutgers foe, but fell in a 10-3 decision.
•   In the nightcap, the Blue Devils found success in the heavier weight classes with freshman Aidan Wallace and sophomore Connor Barket earning wins at 165 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
•   Wallace bested Michael Goldfeder of Cal Poly with a takedown in the first overtime period for an 8-5 decision.
•   Barket came from behind in the third period to defeat the Mustang's Joshua Harkey, 12-7, and round out the Blue Devils' six points.

NOTES
•   Wallace captured his first collegiate win after a sudden victory decision, 8-5, over Michael Goldfeder of Cal Poly.
•   Barket also earned the first win of his Blue Devil career and finished 1-1 on the day.

UP NEXT
Duke continues the road trip on Saturday, traveling north to Stanford for a dual match against the Cardinal at 7 p.m. (ET).
