Wessel Speel improved to 6-2-4 on the season, recording his second shutout of the campaign in split time with
Nathan Gaviser. Speel tallied three saves in the clean sheet and brought his season tally to 30.
After a scoreless first half, Duke opened the deadlocked match in the 50th minute, as
Luke Thomas found the back of the net. The floodgates then opened for the Blue Devils, as
Ulfur Bjornsson tallied his first goal of the evening before
Drew Kerr crossed a ball off a Howard defender and into the back of the net, 3-0.
Bjornsson continued to take aim in the second half, scoring his 10th goal of the season, as
Adam Luckhurst and
Nikolai Bull Jorgensen created a quality attack. Freshman
Julius Suber collected his first career goal, slotting home a banger from 22 yards out. Junior
Jose Ortega notched two back-to-back goals within two minutes, including a half volley into the corner of the net, 7-0.
The Blue Devils capped off the evening with goals from
Felix Barajas,
Andrew Myerson, and
Caleb Donaldson to secure the second match this season with 10-plus goals scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Through the first 15 minutes of play, both sides gathered momentum with Duke leading the shot totals 5-2 and 2-0 on goal.
- In the 50th minute, Luke Thomas broke the scoreless streak, finishing a ball from Kamran Actio and Drew Kerr, 1-0. Thomas stepped through a tackle and slotted home a left-footed shot.
- Minutes later in the 52nd minute, Ulfur Bjornsson collected his ninth goal of the season, collecting a spilled ball by Ireal Wyze-Daly, 2-0.
- The Blue Devils tripled their lead in the 60th minute when Kerr crossed a ball that was deflected by a Howard defender into the back of the net, 3-0.
- Bjornsson added his second of the night and 10th of the season, slotting home a right-footed shot. Adam Luckhurst and Nikolai Bull Jorgensen created the attack, working a give-and-go to free up Bjornsson, 4-0.
- Freshman Julius Suber collected his first career goal on Wednesday, slotting home a banger from 22 yards out from Cameron Kerr.
- In the 76th minute, Jose Ortega finished a great buildup as Suber and Sintayehu Clements to increase the Duke lead to 6-0.
- Ortega added a seventh goal in the 78th minute, hitting a half volley into the center of the net, 7-0.
- Minutes later, Felix Barajas recorded the eighth goal of the night, beating the defense down the left side, 8-0.
- In the 82nd minute, Andrew Myerson collected his first career goal, after Cameron Kerr placed a perfect corner kick into the box.
- With six seconds left in the match, Caleb Donaldson tallied his second goal of the season, as Barajas crossed a ball through the front of the net, 10-0.
NOTES
- 14 different Blue Devils registered points on Wednesday, including eight different goal scorers.
- Andrew Myerson and Julius Suber collected their first career goals against Howard. Myerson, a sophomore, scored in just his second career match, while Suber a freshman, scored in his 12th match as a Blue Devil.
- Graduate Wessel Speel tallied three saves in 75:26 of action, earning the win for Duke. Speel has now tallied 30 saves this season and earned his second clean sheet, and first combined shutout.
- The ten goals on Wednesday marks the second time this season that Duke has registered double-digit goal totals. That mark also is the highest-scoring match in program history against Howard, surpassing the 1972 match, which featured Howard scoring nine goals.
- Sophomore Ulfur Bjornsson recorded two goals against Howard, moving past Adam Luckhurst for the team lead in points (22) and goals (10).
- Graduate Cameron Kerr tallied his first points of the season, assisting on two goals in 56 minutes of action. His brother Drew Kerr also collected an assist on Wednesday, as the two were in the starting lineup together.
- Duke outshot Howard 30-3 in the match, including a 14-3 advantage on frame. The Blue Devils also tallied eight corner kicks in the match.
