LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Three different Blue Devils notched goals as No. 11 Duke posted its fifth straight shutout in a 3-0 blanking of Louisville in ACC field hockey action Friday afternoon.
Charlie van Oirschot,
Kyle Massey and
Brynn Crouse got on the scoreboard for the Blue Devils, while
Frederique Wollaert posted her seventh shutout of the season. Duke (9-4, 5-1) has outscored its ACC foes 13-1 this season. Louisville falls to 5-10 and 1-6 in ACC play.
How it Happened
- After a scoreless first quarter, the Blue Devils broke through for the 1-0 lead 1:44 into the second period. After the Blue Devils made their way into the circle, McVeigh collected a ball that was bouncing around and was able to turn on her defenders to get to the endline to slot a pass to van Oirschot for the tap in. The goal was the third for van Oirschot in as many games.
- McVeigh appeared to draw a penalty stroke in the 21st minute, but after an official review Duke was awarded a penalty corner. The Cardinals defended the corner well with a good save from Brandelynn Heinbaugh.
- Duke continued to push the pace and controlled possession in search of a second goal before halftime. Massey gave the Blue Devils the 2-0 lead, beating her defender goal side to get a stick on a Logan Clouser pass from the right side of the circle.
- The Blue Devils' press frustrated Louisville throughout the opening 30 minutes, holding the Cardinals to just three shots and one penalty corner. Frederique Wollaert made two saves in the first half, extending the shutout streak another 30 minutes.
- Duke's dominance continued in the third quarter as the Blue Devil defense stifled any kind of Cardinal attack. The Blue Devils managed just one shot in the period, heading into the final stanza with a 2-0 advantage.
- Crouse pushed Duke's lead to 3-0 five minutes into the fourth quarter, redirecting a sweep from Macy Szukics on a penalty corner. Kira Curland provided the insert as Szukics took one touch before sweeping to the right post for Crouse. It is the second straight game with a goal for Crouse.
- Louisville had three shots in the fourth quarter, but none were on cage as the Blue Devils outshot the Cardinals 16-6 for the game. Duke had eight penalty corners to Louisville's two. Wollaert finished with two saves while Heinbaugh had six stops in 60 minutes of action.
Notes
- Brynn Crouse registered her third goal of the season, matching her career high of three from last season.
- Alaina McVeigh had an assist to push her career points total to 55, tying for 35th in program history.
- Duke extended its shutout streak to 329:43, dating back to a 1-0 loss to Virginia Sept. 27. The five straight games with a shutout are the second most in program history behind the six consecutive in 1986.

- Wollaert posted her seventh shutout, making two saves. Her 0.33 goals against average would be a Duke single-season record and rank third in NCAA history. The Duke single-season record for goals against average is 0.70, set by Lori Stark in 1986.
- Duke has allowed just one goal in live action in the past 460 minutes and only two in the past 660 minutes. Since letting in two goals at Northwestern, Duke sports a 0.19 goals against average - two goals in 640 minutes of action.
