DURHAM, N.C.β Sixth-ranked Wake Forest scored a pair of second-half goals to get past No. 8 Duke, 3-1, in ACC field hockey action Friday evening at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Duke (10-5, 4-3) tied the game early in the second quarter on an
Ashley Stockdale goal, but a hat trick from Demon Deacon junior Mia Schoenbeck propelled Wake Forest (14-2, 7-0) to its 14th straight win and at least a share of the ACC regular season title.
How it Happened
- Wake Forest grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute as Schoenbeck's sweep from the top of the circle slipped past Duke goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow. Mia Montag and Rachel Thetford were credited with assists on the insert and stick-stop, respectively.
- Duke earned its first penalty corner of the evening a minute later, but Juliette Schulten's hit from the top was denied by Wake Forest goalie Ellie Todd.
- The Demon Deacons had the better of possession for the rest of the quarter, but Duke's defense refused to give them a look at the cage as the Blue Devils held a 3-1 advantage in shots after 15 minutes.
- Duke equalized just over a minute into the second quarter when Ashley Stockdale snuck in behind the Wake Forest defense and knocked in a long hit from Julia Boehringer from the left side of the penalty circle.
- The Blue Devils really settled into their play in the second quarter, pressing forward and possessing the ball. Despite controlling play, Duke couldn't find success in the final third, heading into the locker room at the half knotted at one.
- Just over six minutes into the third quarter, it was Schoenbeck again with a fantastic finish to put Wake Forest in front. The junior midfielder dribbled her way through the Duke penalty circle and rifled a backhanded shot past Chepow for the 2-1 advantage.
- The Blue Devils continued to battle, and five minutes later senior Alaina McVeigh nearly tied the game again as she forced a turnover deep in Wake Forest's defensive third. The Lansdale, Pennsylvania native had a one-on-one with Todd, but the veteran backstop did well to cut off the angle and block away McVeigh's shot.
- Todd continued to shine for the Demon Deacons, adding a fantastic save on a Macy Szukics sweep moments later to keep the visitors ahead, 2-1, after 45 minutes of action.
- Schoenbeck iced the victory for Wake Forest in the final minutes of the contest with a drag flick on the penalty corner. Montag and Thetford once again provided the assists.
- Duke outshot Wake Forest 9-5 for the game and held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners. Todd posted four saves for the Demon Deacons, while Chepow had two for Duke.
Notes
- Duke falls to 10-5 overall and to 4-3 in ACC play.
- The three goals allowed by the Blue Devils mark the first time Duke has given up more than a goal in a game this season since allowing four against Liberty Aug. 29.
- Ashley Stockdale recorded her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Julia Boehringer. The three points by the sophomores give the trio of Madison Beach, Stockdale and Boehringer 14 goals and 14 assists for 42 points β 37 more points than they had in 20 games last season.
- Duke moves to 3-5 against top-20 opponents this season.
