WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Duke field hockey team won in exhilarating fashion Friday night as sophomore back Juliette Schulten drilled the overtime golden goal to lift the fifth-ranked Blue Devils to a 3-2 victory over No. 3 Wake Forest.

Duke (6-2, 2-0 ACC) faced a two-goal deficit after three quarters but never wavered, netting two goals in the final 15 minutes to force the extra session. Sophomores Lily Soldan and Shae Wozniak were the fourth-quarter goal scorers, with Schulten's game winner – assisted by junior Madison Beach and senior Maggie Kondrath – finishing off the exciting comeback.

Wake Forest (5-3, 0-1 ACC) finished the game with a 19-16 advantage in shots, but it was the Blue Devils who registered more on-target attempts, 8-6. Both teams had five penalty corners and four saves on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Duke was the aggressor out of the gate, creating a pair of scoring opportunities in the early minutes. Junior Ashley Stockdale and graduate student Alaina McVeigh got off shots in quick succession, but the attempts were wide and saved, respectively.
Wake Forest quickly raced down the field before Sela Provenzano connected with Bianca Rees-Gibbs for the fastbreak goal to give the home team a 1-0 lead at 2:32. The Demon Deacons registered four more attempts in the period, but the Duke defense held firm, with the last shot saved by junior goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow.
Second-quarter action was even with both teams alternating possession during the 15-minute session. The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons tallied three shots with one on goal, but both attempts were saved by each team's respective goalie. At the half, Wake Forest maintained the one-goal advantage.
The third quarter saw Wake Forest control the run of play with the Demon Deacons outshooting Duke, 3-1, during the period. The home team earned a penalty corner with seven seconds left and converted on the set piece to take a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.
Duke refused to go quietly, getting one back early in the fourth quarter to slice the deficit in half. Beach initiated the sequence by forcing a Wake Forest turnover in its own defensive third, then Kondrath found Wozniak inside the circle. The sophomore, in traffic, collected the ball on her stick and chipped one in at the 48:49 mark to get the Blue Devils on the board.
Feeding off that momentum, Duke ramped up its pressure and found an equalizer six minutes later. This time Soldan delivered the strike, with the sophomore going reverse top-shelf to level the game at 2-2 at 54:21.
Wake Forest had an opportunity to go back in front on a penalty corner in the 59th minute but the poised Chepow stood tall and turned the shot away.
The overtime period was a frenetic one with the teams combining for 11 shots as both sides looked for the winning goal.
Wake forest fired off four shots to start the overtime with Duke producing the next two. Both Blue Devil attempts – one by Wozniak and the other by Soldan – were good looks on net, but the shots were saved by the Demon Deacon defense.
The Blue Devils continued to put the pressure on the Wake Forest defense and that persistence paid off as Duke was awarded a penalty corner. The shot from the set piece went high, but the team had another opportunity with a second penalty corner given. Duke wouldn't be denied a second time, as Schulten ripped one into the lower right corner of the cage to secure the victory.

GAME NOTES:

Duke extends its win streak to four games and moves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in ACC play.
The Blue Devils move to 2-2 this season against NFHCA top-20 teams.
Duke's win over the Demon Deacons marks the team's first win over a top-five opponent since Sept. 7, 2025, when the Blue Devils took down No. 4 Maryland, 2-1.
Head coach Pam Bustin collects her 194th win at Duke and the 356th of her career.
Duke stretches its advantage in the all-time series against Wake Forest to 49-39.
Schulten tallied her fourth goal of the season and the first game winner of her career. The Rotterdam, The Netherlands, product now has eight points in 2026.
Soldan and Wozniak scored their third and second goals of the season, respectively. Soldan owns seven points (2g, 3a) on the year, while Wozniak has four.
Beach and Kondrath dished their second assists this year.
Chepow collected four saves on the evening and improves to 6-2 overall.
Duke was held without a first-half goal for the first time this season.
