DURHAM, N.C. – Graduate student
Alaina McVeigh buried a shot into the bottom-left corner less than two minutes into overtime to lift No. 3 Duke (9-2, 4-0 ACC) over Saint Joseph's (5-6, 3-0 A-10), 2-1, in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon.
McVeigh's marker was her fourth of the season and first goal since Sept. 13 against VCU. Junior
Callie Rogers notched the equalizer in the fourth quarter, giving her four tallies on the year as well. Classmate
Madison Beach dished a career-high two assists with sophomore
Juliette Schulten adding one as well.
Duke stretched its overall winning streak this season to seven games and improved to 7-0 in the confines of Williams Field at Jack Katz stadium. The Blue Devils finished the contest with a plus-19 margin in shots (23-4) and generated eight penalty corners, while the defense held their seventh foe this season to fewer than five attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Joseph's opened the game scoring in the third minute of the opening quarter, as Adele Jardemar converted on penalty corner at 2:34 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Duke issued a quick counter with junior Ashley Stockdale nearly finding the equalizer 90 seconds later, but her shot rung off the post.
- Both sides registered one shot each during the back half of the period, with Duke junior Kaiya Chepow and SJU's Avianna Wagner notching saves to keep it a one-goal contest.
- Duke ramped up its intensity in the second, outshooting Saint Joseph's 7-0 and earning four set pieces during the session. Despite the opportunities, the Hawks were able to keep the Blue Devils out of the goal behind three saves from Wagner, preserving the 1-0 lead at the half.
- The Blue Devils' relentlessness on both ends of the field carried over into the third as the team put up eight more shots while holding the Hawks to two attempts. Duke and Saint Joseph's each earned three corners, with McVeigh getting off a pair of quality shots for the Blue Devils, but both attempts were turned aside.
- After four shots across the first 10 minutes of the fourth, including two on-goal that were yet again saved by Wagner, the Blue Devils found their breakthrough in the 56th minute on a penalty-corner goal – the team's 16th conversion off a set piece this year.
- Junior Madison Beach collected the ball at the top of the circle, and after a little Blue Devil trickery, dished the ball off to sophomore Juliette Schulten on the left side. Schulten fired a shot towards the cage, with Rogers redirecting it off her stick and past the foot of Wagner to level the score, 1-1, with less than five minutes in regulation.
- After being turned away at the doorstep several times earlier in the game, McVeigh refused to be denied again. Receiving the pass from Beach on the right side, the Landsdale, Pennsylvania, standout dribbled a little further into the circle before cashing in the golden goal at 61:43.
