NEWTON, Mass. – The second game of the ACC/B1G Challenge went the full marathon, but it was No. 13 Maryland winning the shootout to come away with a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Duke in Sunday afternoon non-conference field hockey.

Duke (2-2) got goals from junior Ashley Stockdale and sophomore Juliette Schulten, with the pair netting their fifth and third markers of the year, respectively. Graduate student Alaina McVeigh and freshman Adriana Ensani provided the assists on the tallies. The Blue Devils finished the game with an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge on corners. In the cage, junior Kaiya Chepow collected five saves.

Maryland (4-0) trailed 2-0 after the opening period but got goals in the second and fourth quarters to force overtime. Following a scoreless overtime session, the Terrapins finished the shootout with a 3-1 edge over the Blue Devils to complete the rally and steal the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Both offenses were aggressive from the jump and combined for eight shots and five penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes. Duke held the advantage in shots and corners during the period, 5-3 and 3-2, respectively.
Duke opened the scoring in the eighth minute, as Stockdale found the back of the cage for the fifth time this season. On the second set piece of the stanza, Ensani sent a pass to the front of the cage and Stockdale was there to tap it in for a 1-0 lead at 7:20.
The Blue Devils converted another penalty corner late in the opening stanza, doubling their lead at the 13:29 mark. This time it was Schulten with the strike, as the sophomore skipped one through from the left side to give Duke a two-goal lead. McVeigh earned the assist on the goal after providing the insert.
Maryland got one back early in the second period as Francisca Eschoyez finished a Maci Bradford feed to pull the Terrapins within 2-1 at 16:51.
Duke's offense put pressure on the Maryland defense in the third with five shots in the frame. The Blue Devils earned two more penalty corners, but were unable to convert as both attempts following the set pieces were blocked.
After being held without an attempt for over 13 minutes, Maryland finally managed to get the ball into their offensive third. The Terps had two shots, including one on goal. The attempt was denied via a save by Chepow, and Duke maintained its 2-1 lead after 45 minutes of play.
Both teams earned corners in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. Duke's attempt was blocked, while Maryland was turned aside via a diving save by Chepow – her third of the afternoon.
After 10 minutes of chaotic back-and-forth play that featured yellow cards on both teams, the Terrapins managed to find the equalizer in the 59th minute off the stick of Ella Beach. Feeding off the momentum from the goal, Maryland had two chances to end the game in regulation. Chepow stood tall for the Blue Devils, though, collecting saves on both shots.
Neither side found the back of the net during the sudden-victory overtime session and the teams headed to penalty strokes to determine the winner.
Maryland won the shootout, 3-1, to complete the comeback and claim the win.

GAME NOTES:

Duke falls to 2-2 overall and drops to 0-2 against ranked opponents this season.
Maryland snaps a five-game losing streak to the Blue Devils and improves to 37-17-3 in the series.
Duke is now 12-10 all-time in the ACC/B1G Challenge.
Stockdale added another goal to her 2026 total and now owns five on the year. The Darien, Connecticut, product has five markers through Duke's first four games this season after totaling just four scores through 21 games in 2025.
Schulten netted her third goal of the season and now owns four in her Duke career.
Ensani earned her first career point with an assist on the Blue Devils' opening goal.
McVeigh finished the weekend with four points (1g, 2a), increasing her career total to 112 points as a Blue Devil. The Landsdale, Pennsylvania, native sits five points back from moving into a tie for ninth all-time on the program charts, and needs only three more tallies to tie for eighth in career goals.

UP NEXT:
Duke returns home for a two-game weekend set against James Madison and VCU Sept. 11 and 13, respectively. Opening hit between the Blue Devils and Dukes is slated for Friday at 5 p.m., while the Duke-VCU matchup is set for a 1 p.m. start time.
