WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Sixth-ranked Duke field hockey fell in heartbreaking fashion Wednesday evening, suffering a 2-1 shootout loss to No. 8 Boston College in the ACC Championship semifinal at Kentner Stadium. The Eagles won the shootout, 2-0.
Duke (12-6) had two goals disallowed following video reviews, including the seemingly winning tally from
Alaina McVeigh with 35 seconds left in the second overtime. Following the review, it was determined the ball hit the foot of McVeigh on the redirect attempt.
Kira Curland registered the Blue Devils' lone goal, while Boston College goalkeeper Charlotte Kramer did not allow a single goal on four Duke shootout attempts.
How it Happened
- It was a midfield battle between Boston College and Duke as neither squad was able to find a way into the penalty circle. Both defenses were solid with quality tackles and pressure to keep the game scoreless.
- The second quarter was much of the same with neither Duke nor Boston College threatening in the offensive end. Neither squad fired a shot in the opening 30 minutes as the teams headed into halftime scoreless.
- Duke capitalized on its first penalty corner of the afternoon, taking a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. Curland provided the insert to Paige Bitting to set up the sweep for Macy Szukics. The junior sent her ball to the left post where Curland redirected into the cage for her second goal of the year.
- The Blue Devils continued to keep their foot on the gas, earning two more penalty corners in the next few minutes. Barb Civitella appeared to make it 2-0 in the second corner, but her goal was called back due to being dangerous.
- Boston College, bending but not breaking, started to get into the game over the next few minutes and earned its first corner with just over 10 minutes remaining. Madelief Grandjean stepped behind the ball and rifled her shot past Frederique Wollaert to tie the game, 1-1 with 4:18 remaining.
- Duke nearly got the go-ahead goal late in the fourth quarter via its sixth penalty corner of the game. Charlotte Kramer stood tall in goal, denying a stellar sweep from Szukics and the teams headed to overtime.
- Kramer came up big again for the Eagles in overtime, knocking down an Alaina McVeigh shot from the endline. Duke had three straight penalty corners but was unable to get any shots off to set up a second overtime session.
- Boston College came out fast in the second overtime with Duke back Megan Maransky making a good tackle to keep the Eagles at bay. Boston College, maintaining possession, earned a corner in the 72nd minute. Yani Zhong's shot was blocked and Duke settled into a possession game, setting up the heart-wrenching finish.
- Duke outshot Boston College, 9-3, for the game. The Blue Devils allowed two shots in the third quarter and one in the second overtime. Duke won the penalty corner battle, 10-3, including winning four in overtime.
- Kramer finished with five saves, while Wollaert never had her number called to make a stop.
