DURHAM, N.C. – The United Soccer Coaches (USC) recognized four Duke men's soccer student-athletes on Monday for their performance during the 2024 season.
Graduate goalkeeper
Wessel Speel and sophomore forward
Ulfur Bjornsson were named to All-America and All-South Region teams. At the same time,
Ruben Mesalles and
Adam Luckhurst were selected to the third team for the All-South Region.
Speel, a first team All-American selection, earned the title of ACC Goalkeeper of the Year following his impressive lone season at Duke. Speel started all 19 contests in goal for the Blue Devils, allowing 18 goals and registering 45 saves. He posted an 11-4-4 record, helping guide Duke to seven clean sheets on the year and four in ACC play. Speel was also tabbed as a First Team All-ACC selection. In his career, Speel has posted a 62-15-17 overall record, recorded 33 clean sheets, and tallied 272 saves. The Utrecht, Netherlands, native has started all 94 matches he has appeared in, totaling 8500:55 of game action. Following his success in 2024, Speel was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
Bjornsson, the second team All-American selection, was a force at the top during the 2024 campaign. Starting 18 of the 19 matches he appeared in, Bjornsson registered 13 goals and three assists, tallying 29 points to lead all Duke scorers. In his first two contests of the season, Bjornsson tallied four goals and one assist, including his second career hat trick, helping Duke down UC San Diego on Aug. 25, 3-2. The Iceland native was honored as an All-ACC First Team selection and has now totaled 23 goals, seven assists, and 53 total points in his two seasons in Durham. Bjornsson also joined Speel on the MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist list.
In addition to the All-American selections, Bjornsson and Speel were tabbed as first team All-South Region recipients.
Mesalles, a 6-foot defender from Sarasota, Fla., earned a spot on the third team All-South Region, after tallying 1,603 minutes for the Blue Devils this season. He started all 19 matches, tallying one goal and two assists. Mesalles helped guide a backline for the Blue Devils which tallied seven clean sheets including four in ACC play.
Luckhurst, a 6-0 forward from Santa Barbara, Calif., and third team All-South Region recipient, joined the Blue Devils in 2024 and made an immediate impact at the top of the formation. Luckhurst tallied his first goals of the season in a three-tally effort against Averett before scoring goals in five straight contests (UNC, Stanford, NC State, SMU, and Elon).
