HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.—Duke graduate student
Dyson Williams scored six goals, but it wasn't enough as seventh-seeded Maryland outscored the No. 2 seed Blue Devils 9-3 in the second half for a 14-11 victory in the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils conclude the season 13-6 overall while the Terrapins advance to Championship Weekend with a 10-5 mark.
How it Happened
- Sophomore Charles Balsamo opened the scoring for the Blue Devils with a low shot off an assist from freshman Benn Johnston 2:17 into the game. Brennan O'Neill made it 2-0 three minutes later and the Blue Devils continued to play lockdown defense in holding the Terps to just three shots and none on goal in the first 10 minutes.
- Dyson Williams made it 3-0 Blue Devils on a feed from Grant Mitchell with under five to play. Maryland answered six seconds later off the faceoff to bring it to 3-1.
- Duke struck twice in the final 2:10 with O'Neill finding a low corner on the run and Williams tossing in a behind-the-back shot with four seconds left to make it 5-1 for the Blue Devils at the end of the first 15.
- The Blue Devils held Maryland to just five shots, including only one on goal, in the opening quarter and forced six turnovers by the Terps.
- Maryland scored the first two goals of the second quarter before Williams found the cage for the third time of the afternoon on a perfect feed from Josh Zawada to make it 6-3. Max Sloat extended Duke's lead to four just over a minute later before Maryland faceoff specialist Luke Wierman notched his second of the day to make it 7-4.
- Duke's Tyler Carpenter provided the excitement to end the half, knocking the stick out of the hands of Owen Murphy, running the length of the field and finding Williams on the crease to send the Blue Devils into the locker room with an 8-5 lead.
- The Blue Devils were outstanding on defense in the third quarter, giving up just one goal at the 12-minute mark. Firing just two shots in the first 12 minutes in the period, Duke finally got on the board with a fifth goal from Williams after Aidan Maguire intercepted a pass at midfield and found Williams in transition.
- The Terps tacked on a goal with just over a minute left in the third period, cutting the Duke lead to two, 9-7, with 15 minutes left to play.
- Maryland opened the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 10-9, with 10:16 to play.
- Williams tied the game, 10-10, on the ensuing possession, barely beating the shot clock for his sixth of the day and 61st of the season. The back-and-forth continued with Maryland's Braden Erksa scoring to give the lead back to the Terps, 11-10, with 7:50 to play in the fourth quarter.
- The Blue Devils capitalized on another Maryland turnover with O'Neill powering his third of the day past Logan McNaney to make it an 11-11 game with 6:32 remaining.
- Maryland scored the game's final three goals to come away with the 14-11 victory.
- Patrick Jameison finished with eight saves, while McNaney had 11 stops for Maryland.
Notes
- With his first goal of the game, Brennan O'Neill passed Jordan Wolf for lone possession of the No. 3 spot on Duke's all-time points list. O'Neill finished the day with three goals to give him 207 goals for his career and 307 points for his career. Both marks rank third all-time at Duke.
- Dyson Williams' six goals gave him 61 for the season, making him the third Blue Devil to score 60 goals in two different years. He joins Max Quinzani and Zack Greer on the list. The 61 markers tie him for seventh on the list.
- Williams' six goals gave him 212 for his career, tying Justin Guterding for the Duke mark.
- Patrick Jameison made eight saves to give him 193 for the season to rank seventh in Duke single-season history.
- Charles Balsamo's first goal was his first since March 20 at Syracuse and his first point since April 14 against Virginia.
- Jake Naso won nine faceoffs to give him 1,001 victories at the dot for his career. He is the seventh player in NCAA Division I history to record 1,000 faceoff wins.
- Josh Zawada had one assist to give him 45 for the season, ranking seventh in Duke history.
