Blue Devils End Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - The Duke fencing team put a strong end to the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by Penn, on Sunday. The No. 6 women captured all four matches and ended the weekend with a 9-1 mark. The No. 10 men finished the day 3-1 to close the event 6-3.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The sixth-ranked Duke women picked up a pair of dominant wins to open Sunday by downing Wagner (18-9) and Lafayette (24-3) before recording two ranked victories over No. 4 Princeton (16-11) and No. 13 Penn State (16-11).
- The 10th-ranked Blue Devil men downed Wagner (14-13), Lafayette (18-9) and No. 4 Princeton (14-13) before suffering a narrow loss to No. 5 Penn State (16-11).
- On Sunday, the Blue Devil women dominated the foil with a 30-6 cumulative mark. Charlotte Koenig went 11-0 with Zizi Newhard finishing Sunday at 10-2.
- The women's saber group was nearly as impressive with a 25-11 mark. Kavya Menke and Victoria Gorman tallied eight wins each.Â
- On the men's side, Joseph Glasson (foil) and Samir Travers (saber) capped their strong weekend with eight and nine wins, respectively. The two finished with a men's team-high 16 victories during the event.
- Also for the men, Allen Marakov (epee) tore through the Sunday competition and earned nine triumphs.Â
- Across the two days of competition, Koenig and Sophia Shen led all Blue Devils with 23 wins each. Newhard, Gorman and Menke each earned 19.Â
