Fencing Ready for Massachusetts Swing

DURHAM, N.C. -Â The Duke fencing team heads to Massachusetts for a full weekend of competition. The Blue Devils will dual with defending NCAA national champion and current No. 1Â Harvard Saturday before taking part in the Eric Sollee Invitational, hosted by MIT, Sunday.Â

During the Eric Sollee Invitational Duke will face off against five teams.

Duke opened its spring campaign with strong showings at the Philadelphia Invitational where the women went 9-1 and the men 6-3.Â

The Duke women defeated NJIT 25-2, No. 4 Johns Hopkins (DIII)Â 21-6, No. 7 Penn 14-13, No. 2 NYU (DIII) 16-11, No. 8 Cornell 15-12, Wagner 18-9, Lafayette 24-3, No. 4 Princeton 16-11 and No. 13 Penn State 16-11.

The Blue Devil men downed No. 15 NJITÂ 15-12, No. 2 Johns Hopkins (DIII) 15-12, No. 6 Ohio State 16-11, Wagner 14-13, Lafayette 18-9 and No. 4 Princeton 14-13.Â

Across the two days of competition Charlotte Koenig (foil) and Sophia Shen (foil) led all Blue Devils with 23 wins each. Zizi Newhard (foil), Victoria Gorman (saber) and Kavya Menke (saber) each earned 19.

On the men's side, Joseph Glasson (foil) and Samir Travers (saber) finished with a team-high 16 victories during the event.

Following this weekend, Duke will host the Beguinet Classic on Saturday, February 8 in the Wilson Recreation Center.Â
